I think you made a bad trade here, and you keep moving your stop.
I have been building my own systems for 27 years or so (since I was 9). So naturally it is the only thing I would consider.
But for you, having not done it before, and building a system that is mission critical, and making questionable decisions on your purchases, I think it just shows you were not ready/experienced enough for this yet. I encourage everyone to learn to build their own computer but you really need to do it with someone looking over your shoulder that has the experience to help you, and you should also defer to their recommendations when buying things.
At this point it seems to me you've spent a lot of money on this with the overnighting of parts/RMA's and returns and such, plus a huge amount of wasted man power that likely could have been better spent trading.
I think if whatever you have cooking right now doesn't work, you should cut the trade lose and go flat, take your licking and go buy an off the shelf system or have a custom PC builder do it for you. Then later you can start with a more realistic goal of building a second machine that is not mission critical, or building a media server, or etc -- some what of a stepping stone before building a very important machine.
I bought through Newegg Business, so they paid the return shipping, so really all I am out to date is time. I am going to try the new processor with ram directly from the QVL, and other parts here local that can be returned easily. If it fails this time, I am out.
But, I did not mind all the time learning about it. I kind of enjoy things like that. I got to really get into how it all worked.
If you go an i5 or i7 then it has IGP by default - I just wouldn't combine IGP with a discrete (based on issues I have seen occur). However, nothing wrong with having an IGP to keep a monitor going if you wanted to pull out the discrete for servicing, etc.
Intel are about to release "Devil's Canyon (DC)" which are a refresh of the current Haswell "K" series CPU's that can be overclocked. Intel are claiming they will feature superior TIM for improved thermal dissipation.
A conservative overclock can breath new life into a 12-24 month old CPU while retaining 24/7 stable operation. If Intel's claims are correct, the new DC's won't raise operating temperatures by much when conservatively overclocked. Given the difference in price between K and non-K, its worth it.
Good trade or bad, here I go with my second entry. lol!
The motherboard and processor are the same, but both new.
The changes this time:
1) I went with G Skill memory (directly off the QVL)
2) Swapped the Crucial SSD for the Samsung (better rated),
3) Swapped the Seasonic PSU for Corsair 550 modular (local is a lot easier with returns).
4) I rehabbed my case with new power switch and Silenx fans (also local)
I am using the stock cpu fan and and pre-applied thermal paste.
If this does not make it, I sell the parts and move on. But I am excited all over again, and going to build this at a very leisurely pace tonight. I think I figured out what went wrong last time.
If anyone has any final advice, warnings, or comments on my sanity, now is the time.
Congrats - now good luck for all the driver and system configuration, I always felt that was way more annoying with custom systems.. Especially multimonitor sometimes generated its own flaws literally out of thin air
Haha, I know that feeling! I was excited like a little boy again, when building my new trading PC. Overall low budget (500USD), but I've built it to my liking. I am looking forward to the day, when I don't have to care about the money and I focus on the best components only.
