Well, I tried it several years ago and decided that it's not for me because I got some heartburn after a few glasses, but perhaps some guys of the Frankfurt / Hessen area might chime in and convince you otherwise...
You guys could throw this link into Google translator to get more information about this quite 'specific' regional beverage:

Äppelwoi can be compared to cider, but there are few differences:
German apples have a higher content in nitrogen then the grade used in Normandy, and the fermentation of "Äppelwoi" takes place at a higher temperature. Both factors contribute to a faster conversion from sugar to alcohol.
-> Äppelwoi has a higher alcoholic content (5.5 - 7%) than cider (2 - 4%)
-> Äppelwoi has a lower content of sugar (because of the faster conversion)
-> The slow fermentation of cider leads to a higher content in carbonic acid
I like both Äppelwoi and Cider. If you travel to Frankfurt or its surrounding you will be able to test a large variety of local brands of Äppelwoi - most of them homemade.
