I've done IT work for several years now, and do it now while I learn the Futures game. Started out fixing basic network connections and worked my way up to managing a SQL server writing custom code. Best decision I have EVER made about my home computer protection system/programs was to get a solid router and a Mac.
I've had several PC's over the years, my wife has one, and every single one has had problems, failures, needed reinstalls, new hard drives, network cards, USB drivers, etc., etc., etc. I bought a Mac mini 5 years ago as I already had a monitor, speakers, keyboard, and mouse and it has probably been my best purchase just about ever, until I buy the elite subscription for futures.io (formerly BMT), methinks. It is old now and needs more memory but that is simple and a necessary upgrade due to the expansion of flash and RAM requirements as we now use that for our entertainment system. We ditched typical TV and when we do watch TV, we stream/DL everything and with the exception of Hulu, everything is without commercials.
MS Security Essentials is a great tool. Used it many times for clients computers and was surprised at how well it worked.
I gave up on free anti-virus software last year. For generic protection
I would recommend what I now use. Kaspersky Internet Security 2010
(of course the 2011 version is now available).
Seems to offer reasonable protection on-line as well as the ability to
remove viruses and such.
Others with more computer experience have commented on this subject,
so I would listen to them for optimum protection of your data and other
valuable stuff. Kaspersky seems just fine for general, average, day to day
stuff. At least it can be used until one finds the very very best protection.
Install Microsoft Security Essentials, that fights Virus ans Spy ' All in one ' - and you will not have all
all these problems anymore. It's simple and secure and sucks not so many resources of your system.
I use it myself since some month an I'm happy with it.
Regards
Klaus
My system has almost all new guts now and also Windoze 7 for the first time. After much research I also decided (I hate to admit) to use MSE and the built in firewall. Currently these work as well as any other and don't consume much resources.

One thing about MSSE (Microsoft Security Essentials) is that you will want to add exclusions to MSSE for MSSE itself. For some reason on some computers, MSSE gets stuck in a loop scanning itself. Every time it scans itself the contents change, therefore it must scan itself again. repeat ad infinitum.
My wife had horrible performance issues on her home PC. MSSE seemed to be the culprit. I added the exclusions & VOILA!... fixed!
Now I've never had an issue with my laptop, but I added the exclusions anyway.
Do a Google search for detailed instructions on how to do it. There are two exclusions you need to add: one for the process and and another for the executable location.
MSSE, combined with an aggressive HOSTS file, and I've never had a virus or trojan (knock on wood). I don't run any other antivirus. I do Spybot S&D, CCcleaner and Malwarebytes scans a couple of times a year and they always come up clean.
If you really want to make your PC secure, visit this site: https://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm
There are about a dozen different pages that you can select from the dropdown, each dealing with a different aspect of Windows security.
Also, I use Firefox with the NoScript plugin. It's annoying at first until you get all the exclusions for your regular sites added, but it's sickening to see just how many scripts and processes that it halts. Most are harmless advertising, but a few are malicious.
I also recommend MSE. Back when I was using ninjatrader I had lots of problems with other apps like Trend Micro or Avast or Kaspersky and NOD. No problems with MSE.
I have now been running Microsoft Security Essentials for a couple of months, and I am not convinced. It takes several minutes scanning when I start my notebook and it uses a lot of permanent resources, about 160 k of RAM - this is similar to NinjaTrader 7. from time to time it creates a high CPU load, when it starts running in the background.
The update today did not work, but crashed the PC. It is now up and running again, but I do not know whether the install process has been completed properly.
I am thinking about uninstalling it, as things were simpler before I had it. My other antivirus kit only takes half the resources and a fraction of the time for scanning, unless I do a full scan.
The quick scan is indeed fast, because it only scans a few files. The installation worked now, do not know, why the update did not work the first time, as I had stopped all other programs that might interfere. The problem is the RAM usage, along with the periods, when it is scanning something in the background.
