I agree with a background check system...but I have enough sense to know it will not fix the problem. First off, The US Federal Government already requires background checks (https://www.fbi.gov/services/cjis/nics) for sales by licensed gun dealers. Where are law is weak, is with private sales. Just so you know, the gun shooter in Texas, bought his guns from a licensed dealer. We also do not require a mental health background check, which is what we really need. Problem is, there is some serious privacy issues with this information going out and how is a private owner going to check this info. If he can, then anybody can see somebody's mental state record.
So even though the Dems are trying to hang this over the head of Republicans for political reasons, the Dems know it will not fix the problem as well as anybody else. In the end its a losing political battle, because the problem will not get fixed and the majority of Americans still want the right to bear arms.
Is there a way to turn off the chatbox/recent threads(on the homepage) so that I don't see this nonsense thread title, and have the desire to click on it?
No but the Constitution has all sorts of things that have been tacked onto it over the years. FISA courts and the monitoring of US citizens spring to mind.
I'm not anti-gun by any means but as the USA is such a sick society I do think a mental competence test should be seriously considered.
And if someone goes and uses someone else's firearm (like taking it from a cabinet) then the person who owns it should bear some responsibility. I'd bet gun crime would drop sharply if that happened.
Oh yeah, and maybe the death penalty should be mandatory with murder committed with firearms. They're not there for crime, they're there for the defense of the citizenry against govt over reach
Any abuse of that should come with the most severe punishment going.
Have been reading Zerohedge this evening and they have quoted the all too often meat headed Joe Rogannin an article. In this instance I think he is being astonishingly perceptive:
"This country has a mental health problem disguised as a gun problem."
In Switzerland, every army member has his army weapon stored at home. This has been the case for decades. When I was young, even I always had a rifle at home, like everyone else my age. This, where ever I moved around in the country to live in any different place, the weapon was with me during the time I had to serve military.
Has there ever been such shootings in the accumulation as in American society here in Switzerland only in the slightest. No.
Why?
Has it may to do with psychological illness, wrong ideology and low education of this shooters in the US or what else may would it be?
But maybe far fewer of them, don't you think, with the probable outcome that you'd - following your own idiom - be "paying for it" with far fewer dead kids than you are now, which would doubtless be a huge improvement? (I'm not trying to argue the broader issue either way, and don't pretend - as a non-resident foreigner - to understand either side of the argument clearly: I'm genuinely asking for information; asking what you think.)
I like the comparison, but I am actually pro choice (First trimester and usual reasons past that) and do not think women should not have to go through any of the things listed in your screenshot. Just like gun rights, women's rights on birth control have been ransacked by politics?

My example was a little extreme. But it does highlight there are things we could do if we were motivated to do so.
I think the example is ironic in that in many cases the people who want the restrictions for one case, don't want them for the other (and that goes both ways). I think your case (of thinking it's wrong in both cases) is probably rare.
