with 55 pages and still going, NT surely is not being ignored or indifferent'ed so to speak. that itself speaks. I wish there were such truth threads regarding other platforms, but sadly theres none.
Err, no one said there were no issues. Just that we haven't really got a clue what yours are.
I must say, most issues mentioned in those threads are with 6.5 or 7 beta. Seems a little premature to conclude that NT 7 production version is as bad. Horses for courses - maybe it is with charts, I rarely use them..
I just had a friend messaging me he had a $700 loss yesterday because he was trading on SIM, everything said SIM on his screens and apparently ninjatrader 7 final had been issuing REAL orders.
Hmpfr.
He's not putting it out in the open yet because he wants ninjatrader to fix it first.
Wow, that's not good. Let us know what happens. It's easy to have accounts default to live ones and sometimes miss this, but I think all NT users would be interested in this. I must say, I've never heard of it happening. Also, did he have global sim checked? You shouldn't have to if you're careful, but it makes a lot of sense.
Oh, now I'm feeling bad for slamming NT, although I stand by everything I said, without reservation. As I mentioned, I've wasted enough time with it, and the last thing I need to do is prepare a lengthy, detailed explanation.
However, I felt that to be fair, I should conclude with this:
If someone is beginning to learn the basics, NT 6.5 can be a good, inexpensive way to get your feet wet, but I recommend the following:
Expect problems, expect the unexpected. Take a small amount of time to seek resolution, but do not allow this process to consume your time in front of the charts. Find workarounds wherever possible. It's as they say, YOU run the business, not the other way around.
Always keep multiple backups, especially after making any changes. Rebuilding charts or workspaces can be a nightmare. Use backup/restore diligently, it's one of the few things I have never had a problem with.
If you feel the need to try indicators, be quick to discard anything that even hints at being troublesome. If your are an accomplished programmer and can fix things, disregard that comment (maybe).
The DOM has never failed me, that I'm aware of anyway. However, a recent post has raised a very serious possible issue with NT7 and SIM trading. I would look into that, but other than that, using the NT DOM alongside a legitimate charting application is a good combination. When advances in skill justify it, a TT Trader DOM may be a better option in this arrangement, but I don't know this (yet) from experience.
Know the limitations, don't waste your time on problems, and NT has it's place, albeit very limited.
I did say I was finished posting on this subject earlier, and I was venting, but I also wanted to make it clear that I hoped that this perspective may be helpful to others.
Hi hunderp, that makes four posts, and still not a single hint what did not work. Just general bashing of NinjaTrader. I think we should document, what is not working, giving more details, not just ranting.
I do have issues with NT7:
- occasionally false spikes on the connection bar with Interactive Brokers
- problems with offests on rollover day
- I had one crash during backup (large database)
- some indicators will only run in MaximumBarsLookBack = Infinite mode, I had problems with moving averages applied to sessions
- DrawRegion() does not draw porperly but creates bubble lines
- DrawRectangle() cannot plot behind indicator lines
- NinjaTrader cannot read daily data from Interactive Brokers in my timezone, so I have to use Kinetick EOD
- upon each connection NT loads some false contracts month that I already had deleted
and I know of other problems as well.
But there is no dealbreaker, and it has been remarkably stable in trading. Maybe, not good enough for automated trading, but certainly good enough for any discretionary trader.
Apparently the problem is that if you uncheck "Global simulation" and you select SIM in the DOM it can be that the sim orders are being send live to your broker.
He might have an ATM who he enabled on SIM but no automated strategy like you refer to.
