Google search will not work for our needs. Premium content for one, and for two no way to categorize all the different content (like downloads vs private messages vs posts).
As I already mentioned, search is completely overhauled on the new framework. Have you logged into the beta and seen the new search?
Even the default search on the new framework will be drastically improved upon, but it's a lot more powerful than today.
futures.io (formerly BMT) quality means posts free of pranksters, speaking "on topic" and lots of thoughtful well composed replies. futures.io (formerly BMT)'s edge lies with the Elite membership. Elite members have skin in the game. They are serious enough to pay for access to a forum for which there are countless competitors offering for free. They are less likely to sabotage their investment with garbage. Everyone here knows the high standards of futures.io (formerly BMT) make it what it is.
I do like the flat file system being proposed. It will help with searches, which for me is the principle organizer of any forum. When non-members read and find posts of interest flagged Elite, they will be teased to join. That is the business plan. To insure the plan, members, may only post Elite threads. After all you are not running two forums. Members are members. Non-members are only allowed access to tease them to join.
Filters to View All, View Elite, View Non-Elite are of little interest if quality is maintained. I will chose View All by default as I like to see everything. Quality would be affected if Non-Elites in mass are first to start threads of new and interesting topics. Those threads could dwarf Elite threads in time. Who got there first would determine quality. This cannot happen with the present system as the topics are limited for Non-Elites.
OK, I agree with what you've said at the top, but I am not seeing how the new proposed system would really change it to what you are saying at the bottom.
Right now, an Elite Member can choose to create an Elite topic or a non-Elite topic. The choice is decided based on where they place their thread.
What I am proposing is that an Elite Member can still decide to make it Elite or not, but instead of having two sections like "Trading Journals" and "Elite Trading Journals" we have only one section, and within the section we mix both Elite and non-Elite threads by using a flag. The flag is set by the thread starter. There would be a visual style to distinguish the threads from each other in a quick glance Forum View/thread listing. And there would be a filter so you could only see one or the other if you wish.
If a non-Elite starts the thread, it will be a non-Elite thread open to all. futures.io (formerly BMT) will loose control of it most valuable commodity.
I don't see the point of allowing Elite members to post non-Elite threads. Non-Elites only need samples to decide if they want to join.
Around half the content on the site today is non-Elite. You can certainly make an argument that the quality of Elite content is far higher, but that is for each person to decide.
I'm not sure I'm following on the losing control part.
79% of these posts are contributed by Elite Members.
14% are from Market Wizards (which are Elite Members, but I broke this out separately).
7% of these posts are contributed by non-Elite Members.
It is important to note that this is determined by whether they are Elite right now. They could have been non-Elite at time of post, then later became Elite. If so, they are included in the Elite group number. Same for Market Wizard, it's as of right now.
futures.io (formerly BMT) v 5.0 improvement: email notification.
Title Bar is not included on email notification.
There is A LOT of things at email's header (beginning of the message) that could easily be moved to bottom, turning things easier to read on cellphone for instance.
Also, I dont know why, but I only receive two or three email notifications while there are a lot of posts on thread.. and no, messages are not classified as spam, and all notifications settings are ok at futures.io (formerly BMT)'s.
One last thing, when I receive an email notification and I click on "View newest post" option, frequently an old post/page opens up, usually 2 or 3 pages old. I THINK the reason for that could be something related to last page I visited on that thread..i guess.
I just want to give everyone a quick update on the new framework.
IPS is releasing IPB 4.1 in the next week or so, and it has some good advancements. I plan to do another "from scratch" conversion and test 4.1, and around the same time should have the first few finished projects completed by the first developer.
He is currently coding 14 projects for me, and I have probably that many or more still to send him before I would consider launching on the new framework. From a developer code point of view, I think no sooner than Jan 1.
In the meantime, I'm turning attention towards theme design. I'm trying to find the right person that can develop the theme that I want. Unfortunately this is proving to be a challenge. I haven't found one yet. I hope I can find one soon, or else convince someone to take on the job for the right price. I expect the theme design to take around 90 days.
So, I am hoping around January 1 the beta site will be in pretty good shape. I'll be active again in this thread in a couple weeks and ask for more help testing the 4.1 release.
As I'm sure you know, the rule for development projects that has proven itself over time, again and again -- and I'm not joking or being cynical -- is to make your absolute best estimate, taking into account everything you know, and giving a large cushion for over-runs, and then double it.
I used this rule for a long time, both for estimating my own time and for scheduling others, and I never found it to over-estimate a job.... usually it under-estimated it.
I'm hoping, of course, that this case proves me wrong. But I'm just saying....
Good luck in any case. You have to have a target date, so taking your best shot is still the best idea, even though you know it has to be taken with a grain of salt.
