Yes, I've been reading about it for the last 18 months after I finished my 60 day juice fast (18 months ago). A juice fast is fasting on only fruit and mostly vegetables processed via a juicer, with all the pulp discarded.

Results of a new study on mice and a phase 1 trial of humans suggest that prolonged cycles of fasting - for 2-4 days at a time - not only protect against toxic effects of chemotherapy, but also trigger stem cell regeneration of new immune cells and clearing out of old, damaged cells.
The study, by researchers from the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles, and published in the journal Cell Stem Cell, is the first to show that a natural intervention can trigger regeneration of an organ or system through stem cells.
The team believes the findings could benefit people with immune system damage, for example if they have received chemotherapy treatment for cancer. It could also benefit the elderly whose immune systems are weakened through aging, making them more susceptible to disease.

I've done a two week water fast, where I consumed nothing but water.
I've also done a 90 day (three month) juice fast, where I consumed nothing but juiced veggies and fruits (minus pulp, unlike a blender). About 2 heads of lettuce a day, two huge bags of parsley and cilantro, several apples and a couple lemons, each day (plus lots of other variations -- just illustrating an example).
In both, the hardest part is the first week as your body adjusts. After that it gets much easier (no hunger pains). For this reason I personally think doing a 2 week water fast every now and then as opposed to a more frequent but shorter duration 2-3 day water fast, is better. But everyone is different.
I can tell a story about high cholesterol/Lipitor.
Throughout the latter 1990's I suffered from extremely high Cholesterol...by the year 2003 I was 12x high risk and my GP was constantly suggesting I take Lipitor ....I was also borderline diabetic...which is really diabetes in denial.
I did take it eventually but stopped after 3 weeks as my hands went arthritic...my fingers hurt and I was a programmer back then and I needed my hands....stopped taking the lipitor and the hurt went away...in retrospect with the news about lipitor that was a really good thing...I was one of the 15% who are allergic to statins
I went to a Naturopath and the first thing he did was put me on a cleansing diet which eliminates wheat among other things and I did this without telling my GP and after one month my cholesterol dropped 10%. My GP went through the roof when he found out what I had done and accused me of being hopped up on some kind of naturopathic drug...which I was not. I believed I was allergic to wheat because it was the main item I stopped eating.
Soon after I went to Thailand for 6 months teaching ESL. I went there 10x high risk and came back high normal...I also reduced my weight from 245 lbs to 210lbs in those 6 months. There is very little wheat in a Thai diet...rice, lots of veg, little bit of chicken/pork, almost no beef, lots of fish and fruit....I felt great.
It reinforced my belief that wheat was bad for me....I was not celiac though. Three months on a normal western diet I was back to square one again and I was now diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. the GP read the riot act and said probably truly that if I continued on this way I would get pancreatitis (sp?). I said I would eliminate wheat again.
I did...after one month my cholesterol dropped 10% and every month thereafter there was an additional 10% drop until I was low normal where to plateaued out.
but it is hard to eliminate wheat I really feel for people with celiac disease. And I had to deal with diabetes now.
It is written by 4 MD and consisted of drumming the evils of sugar into your head and made the connection between Sugar and Cholesterol. There was a case study in it that could have been me....diabetic, overweight, and very high cholesterol AND allergic to Lipitor
I realized I was not allergic to wheat...I was converting the wheat to sugar ...lots of bread...lots of sugar production.
I also found out that the body's control of cholesterol takes place at night. Controlling my blood sugar and not having high blood sugars before retiring to sleep let my body control cholesterol levels properly. The body produces 85% of the Cholesterol in your system....food only contributes 15% so it makes sense to allow your body to work properly in this respect.
Ever since controlling my night sugars, I have had normal cholesterol levels...no more 12x high risk situations any more...and I do it without drugs!!!
