First I will say MB should take the time to develop an official version of their trading platforms for Linux. Directly I will say your retail users are most likely Windows clients but your growth going forward, do not ignore the prevelance of Linux boxes being used for trading purposes.
To the forum, this thread has been cold for 2yrs and I'm not sure if people have discovered that a viable environment has been achieved with the updates of Wine and Linux kernels. I run MB Desktop pro under the latest Wine release, no need to state the actual version as it has worked for the past few iterations. But if you are running Fedora, Cent, or Zorin (the systems I have tested it under) you should not have any problems with running it under the pre-packaged install versions of Linux with Wine. But somethings that you should consider and why it may not be appropriate for you to run executions through MB on your Linux box.
1. There is a 5 - 9 second delay between your click and transition to order received with the server. Counting execution time, the slippage on market orders can be 10 -13 seconds.
2. Charts and other processes that are dynamically updated may not work at all. This may or may not be an issue for some as many of use MB for execution but other softwares for charting and such. Just know that the software has issues with dynamic updates.
3. Lastly the best alternative is to still run your executions through a Windows machine (in regards to MB), however if you are a positioning guy and use limit orders primarily, are not concerned with millisecond executions, and have an average hold time greater than 5minutes you should be fine.
