I'm just after some feedback on specific components that I have selected to use to build a new workstation. My current workstation has developed intermittent motherboard I/O issues so it's time to build a new one from scratch. I can reuse some of the components but I'm essentially starting fresh.
What I can reuse
Thermaltake Case
Thermaltake ToughPower 775W power supply
Pioneer DVD burner
2 SATA hard drives.
4 x 22 inch Samsung 226BW
Logitech Performance MX mouse
Logitech diNovo for Notebooks Keyboard
While this seems overkill for a workstation, I also use it as a file server and I run VMware virtual machines for development sandboxing. I will run this setup 12-18 hours a day and expect reliability. I don't need to overclock it as it has enough overhead for what I need but but I have selected components that might let me squeeze some more life out of it as it ages or if my needs change.
A couple of questions for anyone running anything on this list please
Any bugs I should know about? How to fix them?
Any reliability problems with any of this gear?
Have I missed any obvious compatibility issues?
Considering what I'm using it for, will an SSD for the OS provide a worthwhile performance increase at reasonable value and are SSD's reliable enough to be depended on for long hours of continuous operation?
I believe the video card can be flashed to essesntially change it into a 6970. Has anyone done this? Reliable?
Any other thoughts people might have?
I don't have a choice about waiting. I need a computer asap.
After some more reading on the internets, is anyone running this graphics card with multiple monitors? It seems there are different types of display port to dvi adapters and I'm not sure what I need.
Those cards can get tricky. You need what's known as an "active" adaptor. I don't personally use one but I was until I read these types of reviews and spoke to a fella at ATI/AMD and decided against it. (Stuck to my old Matrox)
Read the reviews (they seem more relevant than specs) of these cables and see if you can find what you need.

Watch out on DVI to Displayport adapters. I had them first for my two NVS 295 cards and four monitors, and it was total crap. I ended up using monoprice.com and getting the cable that is DVI to DisplayPort, no adapter, just a single cable. This has been 100%, no problems, whereas the adapters were causing all sorts of issues.
Hi, can you tell me the advantages and disadvantages of running your trading platform in a virtual machine?
"Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." --- "Therefore, I Believe it and I will see it. And every day and in every way, I am healthier, wealthier, and wiser."
I've done some more reading on adapters since posting and the internet agrees with you Mike. The more I read the more it seems sticking my existing video cards (2 x 8600GTS silent) is worth a try. I'm reasonably sure they aren't part of the motherboard problem and for the cost of a 6950 + adapter or cables, it seems like it's worth a try. Yes they will be the bottleneck in the system but it's one less hurdle and cost to getting operational again. I can take my time finding something that works as graphics cards can be easily swapped. I'll check out monoprice for the cables thanks.
The reason I run Ninja in a virtual machine is for development work. I can mess with whatever I like and it won't stuff my "live" platform that lives natively on my workstation. Snapshots are easy for reverting things back to before I tried something and VM's can easily be moved, say to my laptop for working away from the desk.
