Leaving CrashStation,,,need anything from the forums
ugh thats not encouraging.....tradestation crashes all the time for me...so i was thinking about multicharts for trading and then of course i am using ninja too.
I cannot stand ninja's usability but there are some amazing tools for it (particularly the murrey math lines which i cannot find anywhere else). I think multicharts has the best usability i have found plus i am used to easylanguage. the only thing it is really missing is keyboard shortcuts (cmon...really mC? too difficult - even tradestation can do that) but that is apparently "in the mail".
MC allows playback
Of course i just found out that i cant generate range or tick bars using IB feed....so i may be sticking with TS just to get the data (which i can use on Ninja and multicharts at same time) instead of buying a feed for both Ninja and MC.
So.....TS - IM BACK..... the forums over there have tons of support...almost worth the monthly fee. there are some amazing coders over there (like here for ninja).
Sorry to hear about your crash issues. I have been with TS for a few years and have zero problems so I'm thinking it might be somthing with your computer or ISP. There was a period a while back when I would get a pop-up saying disconnection but only lasted about 1 second and that issue has been gone for a while now.
That's interesting... MultiCharts was built specifically for backtesting and portfolio trading, only recently has it been possible to do manual trading. What platform have you used that you feel is superior to MultiCharts for backtesting, and what specifically (features) make it so? I've found MC backtests to be far more reliable and useful (realistic) than other platforms, and you can use EasyLanguage, C++, C#, so pretty flexible.
I can think of only once or twice in 2 years that MC has ever crashed on me, and it was usually due to my own mistake with a loop in EasyLanguage code.
But from what you posted, it sounds like a memory exhaustion issue. I'm sure you are aware of the .NET memory limits for 32-bit apps, and of the hack you can make to MC to increase memory usage a bit until they deliver a 64-bit version. I've personally tested years and years of tick data and never had a memory exhaustion issue, but I've only tested one instrument at a time, which of course is not the same as 1000.
IB tick data is highly filtered, completely unreliable "snapshot" data, not recommended by anyone I know of on the forum if you want to build tick-based charts like tick, volume, range, renko, etc. Minute data and higher is fine, but tick data or any bid/ask data is terrible through IB.
