Hi Mike,
Richard here on Lysakat (my better half trading) partner's account. First let’s say we are new traders, but by that we mean we trade full time for a living.
Although interested in futures, forex, day trading, discretionary..., OK whatever can be traded we hope to either embrace them all or narrow to what suits us best and probably the latter. Currently we are focusing on algorithmic trading partly because of my background in designing and building computer systems and it is something we are both familiar with. We have spent several years preparing, studying and understanding what we can long before trading.
We are foremost proponents for back testing or testing in almost any form tending towards actual trade simulations (as close to real as possible). We have some reasonably simple rule driven indicators we use.
We started with manual testing and feel if realistic and well done it trains one to trade, defines protocols and routines, and refines decision making as well as test a system. It is amazing what you can learn if you can do hundreds of simulated trades every day. It is like a time machine were you can experience everything at 10X speed. I say this because waiting for the next day’s trades can seem to take forever. In real-time trading you may forget what you did yesterday, didn’t make the notes you wanted, your mood is different, you stayed up too late… so it is a serious amplification of many daily variables that will affect your trading. These also happen in testing but seem more keenly observable.
So this bring us here to a new platform. You've caught us at an interesting time. I am currently evaluating MC in trail mode mainly due to flaws and the lacking sophistication of the languages supporting our current platforms. We’ve learned many things with the free version of ProRealTime (PRT) but found that their implementation of time (not allowing to look forward) caused certain indicators to be displayed on the wrong date as in swing high/low. I loved ThinkorSwim (TOS) because to start it seemed to be much better at dealing with graphic representation and has quite worked well for a time. But now I am interested in more realistic computer simulations to optimized and search for system anomalies and proficiency. Just recently I have discovered unpredictable behavior (random calculation changes) and some newly introduced display anomalies as part of a list of issues. So here I am at MC again.
We originally looked at this as a primary choice but because it lacked options support so continued looking. We were looking for two things, good reliable implementation and portfolio (multi instrument) and accounting testing. Didn’t realize what we were asking for. So I hope to provide a newbies view of why MultiCharts.
1) How long have you been using MultiCharts?
A few weeks, although we did hack at it for a month a year ago.
2) What are your favorite features of MultiCharts?
Broker independence, reliability, multiple coding languages supported (I find that if it supports standard languages, the C’s, R or others make it real) where a scripting or higher level language may not allow you access to some functionality. It is generally feature and graphic display rich.
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in MultiCharts that you could not do without?
True programmability. Robust support of all classes instruments (only lacking options). Longevity, we don’t want to have to learn a new platform every time we change trading style or major asset class.
4) Do you use MultiCharts in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
We have IB as our current broker and realize MultiCharts can be used for trading, (same reason I liked TOS except for their commission costs) so perhaps someday soon but the current interest is testing. It takes practice to be proficient and confident enough to trade. Learning IB was interesting.
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does MultiCharts help you with this?
From our newbies perspective is seems to support both and because it does makes it that much more desirable. One platform to rule them all, so to speak but perhaps wishful thinking.
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use MultiCharts?
It has much to offer and so lots to learn, however it is comparatively straight forward and somewhat intuitive. Every platform has terminology to translate into and understand, MultiCharts is no different but seems more intelligible.
7) How do you rate MultiCharts' customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
NA
8) Do you believe MultiCharts is competitively priced?
Yes, although one always hopes for free.
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for MultiCharts?
After TOS I find the community has depth and support. There is enough range in sophistication and duration that most questions or discussions are intelligent and available. Big Mikes, I guess now futures.io is a fine example of this.
1) How long have you been using MultiCharts?
Since about 2016
2) What are your favorite features of MultiCharts?
The charts, and ease of use.
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in MultiCharts that you could not do without?
Nothing to compare, this is the first platform I've ever used.
4) Do you use MultiCharts in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
I've done both
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does MultiCharts help you with this?
Currently discretionary trader
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use MultiCharts?
Easy to learn, but would like to learn more, would love to talk with fellow MultiCharts users.
7) How do you rate MultiCharts's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
AMP Clearing customer support is pretty good.
8) Do you believe MultiCharts is competitively priced?
Its free thru AMP Clearing, but was considering paying for the lifetime license for $1500, but would like to speak with fellow MultiCharts users to see what I would gain, but I do believe in "You get what you pay for".
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for MultiCharts?
N/A
2) What are your favorite features of MultiCharts?
Performance and stability.
3) What are some must-have deal breaker features in MultiCharts that you could not do without?
Automated trading & Lifetime License.
4) Do you use MultiCharts in simulation mode only, or do you place live trades with it?
Simulation for now. Will be using automated live trading.
5) Are you a discretionary trader or an algorithmic trader? How does MultiCharts help you with this?
Algorithmic trading. MC can help with fast and accurate back testing and optmization.
6) How easy/hard was it for you to learn to use MultiCharts?
About 1 week. Still learning.
7) How do you rate MultiCharts's customer service/support, assuming you have needed to use it?
I had to contact the support team for MC's discussion forum access. Took less than 5 minutes to get me setup. Would have been nice to be able to setup it up myself.
8) Do you believe MultiCharts is competitively priced?
Yes when compared to other platform.
9) How do you rate the community support that exists for MultiCharts?
7 out of 10. I have not needed much help as most questions were already asked. I have been helping others where I can.
