Another update. Developer expects to have about 5 more conversion related items done within a week or two, so at that point I hope to finally do another new beta test.

The developer is quoting me over $1,000 just for the conversion of the Downloads area (which contains over 1,600 files), with the high cost mainly coming from maintaining the "keywords" or "tags" and then the user comments and ratings.

So my question is, how important are these ratings, comments, and "tags" to you guys on these old files?

The description would be maintained, even if the "tags" were not.

Yuck,

I wouldn't be concerned if that was lost moving forward. I don't use them, but the contributors like to see the comments. They have likely already seen the comments in the download section and any discussion in the forum would do as well.

Seems expensive with little return...

I often use the keyword/tag search. I never use the user comments or ratings.

Without the search, it would be difficult to find anything there, unless someone else already supplied the link. That would make the Downloads almost unusable.

On the other hand, it is likely that, at some point, the NT7 downloads would become out of date. The problem would be to know when -- it would be some time after NT8 is out in non-beta, and after a lot of old stuff had been converted. That could be a long time.

So I would say that, unless there is another good way to search the area, dropping the keywords/tags would be almost the same as dropping the ability to find anything in there. I doubt that the comments and such would have much importance, if that makes a difference.

Do you find the description doesn't contain the keywords? Because description would be searchable

Can you dump the current tags/keywords to the descriptions? That way if they are searchable in the new one you can easily carry those over?

I can't think of what it would be called off hand, but run a query that combines the tags/keywords to the end of the description. Then import that to the new site and those items are carried over and searchable.

Not while keeping costs down, apparently touching the keywords, reviews, comments account for the majority of the quote.

If this has already been discussed/requested then I can delete this post. I think a useful enhancement would be what I have come across in another forum recently. Sorry, but I can't recall where I saw this, though I might could put in some time looking for it if it's really necessary.

Let's use the "Big Mike in Ecuador" thread as an example. Someone may reply to a post with a lot of pics and quote the original post. This means all the pics/long text are redisplayed in the quoted text and makes reading the reply and thread very cumbersome.

It would be nice if the lengthy quoted text/images could be hidden, providing only a paragraph at the top, with an option to display the remainder of the quoted text/images if the reader chooses to do so.

I did a quick test just now.

It turns out I had a very incorrect idea of the "keywords" in a Downloads search. I thought somehow that they are always what the search is looking for.

I did a search looking for "pivot" in title/description for a particular user, and got 4 hits. They each had a short separate list of "keywords", which did not have "pivot" but did have "pivots" (plural).

So I did a search on keywords only for "pivots" and got the same 4 hits, this time with the "pivots" keyword highlighted. That's fine.

Then did a search on keywords for just "pivot", no "s", and got no hits. That makes sense, but is also worthless. I don't know how the keywords are generated, but I would say that probably they never get much use, and are not of any value when the title and description can be searched, because you would naturally use a more free-form choice of search terms anyway, and would get a hit in the description more often.

Save the thousand bucks, I would say. Ditch 'em.

Bob.
