What utility are you using that tracks all those temps?

I don't like the amount of "personal info" this program requires, I'm always wary about installing unnecessary stuff but I closed my eyes and accepted everything Might be overkill but it's nice. I found it in the Windows 8 store, it's called PC Monitor in the store. Free up to 5 computers.

This is an excellent question -- I'll check it when I get to the office tomorrow.. what conclusions would you draw in either scenario (whether it's relatively cool, or relatively hot)?

If the motherboard temp (and any other component temps that you can measure) is also running hot, then more than likely you have a general cooling problem and need to focus on the airflow throughout the case and/or the case itself. If its just your cpu that is running hot, then you need to focus only on the cpu/heatsink configuration.

Try to get as many temp readings from as many components as you can. That should give you a 'thermal' picture of what is happening inside your rig.

Unlike the Sandy-Bridges the Haswell´s heatspreader isn´t hard soldiered to the die, only thermal grease between.
This is why newer processors run hotter and cannot be overclocked as well (although they should due to a tinier production process).

Right, but running 100 degrees Celsius while overclocked to only 4.0GHz with a H80i cooler is not a function of the chip--something's up with the cooling of the chip. Still haven't got a chance to look at it. I'm running around 40 degrees during normal loads OC'd to 4.0G right now, so it's plenty cool, and I will investigate it as soon as I have time to do so.

The haswell chip is only like 200 square mm and has to dissipate like 90watts through bad termal paste to the heatspreader.

You might have to do something like that

Maybe also your mainboard increases CPU voltage automatically to a too high voltage?
