I did 15 mins because my experience that was the timeframe that it happen. @Big Mike is there a cache that holds the images in a post until it is saved? Maybe that cache has a time limit to keep from holding photos for post not saved?

I would do longer, but I have to leave my desk for a lunch appointment. If this one works, I will try an hour this evening.
Just so steps are clear: Click reply, click manage attachments, upload photo, close second window, embed to post, start typing text, click submit reply after time.
I have not closed the Attachment Manager during this time
ok....it is 11:07
I am going to submit this message but leave the Manage Attachments open still for 5 minutes....like I forgot to close it
EDIT: I closed the Attachment Message but not by "Close this window" but rather by the "X" in the upper right corner of the window which is how I used to do it, at 11:13
before I did that test I did another test by creating a message...embedding a different image but not submitting the message...after I took screen shots to confirm what I did I erased the message, closed the reply to thread along with the Attachment Management window
I then created the last test method with a new snake image and over the 30 or so minutes I kept that message idle I monitored the attachments in my UserCP
As you can see, abandoning the first message did not erase the image....as can be seen it thinks it is "In Progress". I refreshed the screen several times while waiting for the 30 odd minutes to elapse and the screen never changed.
I then submitted the second test and then accidentally closed out nexusfi.com (formerly BMT) {crap...fat fingers} on reentering the UserCP the original attachment for the erased message was finally removed.
Here are my screen shots
I suppose this shows that the attachments hang around for some time...even though they are not used and the reply is erased. on closing down and reopening nexusfi.com (formerly BMT) everything valid is reset.
Now we shall see if the other test message has problems.
No, the moment the upload is completed it is assigned to your profile. There is no cache and no timeout. And so far no one has been able to reproduce this based on a timing issue.
