The next paragraph in my post should shed some light on that. Sorry, I was editing it while you were responding.
For me, it's not that hard to thank, it literally takes no effort to click a button after I read each post. But I think just a single button click will make a world of difference to many people who otherwise seem unappreciated. The thanks isn't completely meaningless, it means that I've read and have contemplated what they've said and that it's not completely horrible. But regardless, I don't think people will really read too far into the reason just like a smile is a smile. If a smile is fake, it still brings about a better morale in society if people smile fake than not smile at all.
All in all, I'm just trying to send out positive vibes where there may be none. Maybe somewhere down the line someone from another forum comes here and sees that people on bmt care about each other seeing all these thanks and chooses to join to be apart of this website and have new things to offer us as a community.

I've always wondered what people think of giving thanks to posts and what criteria a post needs to getting a thanks. Do any of you try to keep a certain ratio of thanks given to thanks received or do you just wing it? Am I the only person who thinks …

I'm new here (as in real new) and ran into this post almost immediatly.
I'm mostly a lurker and won't reply to a post as I'm in the heavy learn mode currently. Still, any post that provokes a good thought or has good information probably gets a thanks as I got a benefit and saying thanks is "TRT" (The Right Thing) to do.
In my opinion, "Thanks" should not be meaningless, which it would be if it's automatic.
If I nod my head and say "yes" to a post, or if it shows me something new, or if I just like it, I'll usually say "Thanks," because I would do the same in person. I look for something that I have a good response to (even if I don't particularly like it, but see the point, or learn something.) It's an acknowledgment.
If it's something that I don't respond to particularly, then I do the same as I would in person... pass on without comment.
Why do anything else? And, if you want to Thank everything, that's fine too, if you really appreciate everything. Since I don't, necessarily, I save the acknowledgment for those that I do.
I would also say that if you "Thank" everything, people would soon notice and stop valuing it from you.
(Obviously, this is a very slow Saturday morning, to be writing so much about this.... Just say Thanks if you like something.)
The "Thanks" button is the futures.io (formerly BMT) pheronome (a chemical substance that is usually produced by an animal and serves especially as a stimulus to other individuals of the same species for one or more behavioral responses).
There are many ways to foster collaboration. I guess the Thanks button is one way to do it. You can read about "Stigmergic Collaboration" to find various forms of environment that have been created on the WWW in order to acheive collaboration without a top down approach. That's a very interesting field.
When I get thanks on a post it is like getting smiled at from a pretty girl in the mall...
I always felts giving thanks is when you found something useful. Thanks are appreciated and the more thanks one gets to more prone they are to share more.
I've always thought that to gain my place on the forum, and feel what I've posted was worth it, is to have my number of thanks equal or surpass my number of posts. I guess it's just a psychological benchmark that I'm slowly aiming for. Being thanked for posts definitely gives more incentive to continue posting and I feel, in a way, that it feeds good trading behaviors to take root and flourish.

I feel that being thanked is a good feeling after posting. I wont go on a thank spree. But I do thank and i like to be thanked.
Here at futures.io (formerly BMT) i feel like the caliber of people in the community is much higher than other places. So a thanks here means a lot more than in other forums. Not only that but it also makes people conisder what they post more. Posts that are well written but maybe lack in content up to par in the community on futures.io (formerly BMT) may not get a thanks but in another forum would have gotten plenty.
i consider a lot of posts i make and spend time on go unthanked. But that does not stop me from posting. Maybe my content was subpar or i was incorrect or maybe it was good but you shouldnt look to get a pat on the back every post.
I only thank the posts i either got something out of, found intresting, or though was good content in general. I think it should stay that way. As the posts with more thanks i focus on reading more carefully. As others thought the contents were valuable. Its almost like a thank you and a tag This Post Is Good. If all posts were thanked i think it would depreciated the value
So to be honest, I didn't go on a thanking spree, but I did thank more posts than I otherwise normally do. I feel great about it, and guess what? I feel it's gotten me more likes myself because people feel more comfortable putting time into reading my posts because I've demonstrated that I read theirs. Anyways, I'm pretty happy about finally getting to my little goal of having as many thanks as posts. I've almost gotten to the benchmark and if anyone feels the need to push me over the threshold please be my guest!
I'm glad to help new traders because frankly I don't think any of us knows the market completely inside and out! Honestly, I don't think it's even possible to know everything about the market or even how it works entirely. We just have to pragmatically put it together piece by piece untill we come to an understanding where we can become profitable as we adapt to the ever changing behemoth we know today as the US Stock Market.
THANK YOU ALL,
Itchy
