Im interested to know how you deal with the ‘What do you do’ question at social events.
So I was at a BBQ yesterday and going through the usual small talk when the inevitable question of employment popped up. Heres how it went:
------------------------------------------ Other person: So what do you do?
Me: Im a trader.
Other person: So you gamble for a living, haha. I once traded forex and ....
[insert approximately 20 minutes of monologue on how rigged the markets are until eventually Im asked]: So what do you trade?
Me: Actually I trade on the futures market.
Other person: [ignoring my answer] Have you tried Bitcoin?? Bitcoin is amazing! They say its going to be 30,000 in 6 months!!
[Insert about 10 minutes of bitcoin monologue].
Me: Nope. Dont trade bitcoin but Ill look into it. Sounds amazing.
Other person: Yeah man do that! If you had bought $50 two years ago you would be rich now...
[monologue about how rich I would be if I had got in a few years back and how easy the money is]
Me: Sweet. Thanks. Ill try and remember that. Um..Im just going to go over there and get myself a drink Ill catch you later.
[I go somewhere else and get into another conversation].
New person: So what do you do?
Me: Im a tool and die maker.
[End of occupation question]

great stuff Grantx....no doubt, beeen there many times...as an ....aspiring trader, im actually in a less favorable position. What do I say, ...."im trying to be a day trader"....never a fun place to be for me.Heres a good one...I actually am a stay at home dad.My wfe has a good job, and I refuse to hire someone to watch my kids while I go back to work.Telling people that at parties gets a different reaction every time....But typically, they utter something like "well, thats pretty noble," or "wow , im impressed" or some other horse %$#@ line.I make it a point to never ask people I meet what they do.IMO, trying to be a consistent trader has been the hardest thing i have ever done.We all know the challenges that have to be overcome, and then some putz at a party tells you about bitcoin
That's a good one, stay at home dad, only trouble is you need kids!
Regardless of what I do (I do several things) whenever asked that question I reply "as little as possible" normally shuts down that line of conversation.
I'm actually quite into crypto so enjoy talking to anyone who is knowledgable about it.
My wife is always telling me to stop making stuff up and just tell people what I do.
Here are a few reasons why I avoid it (occasionally I forget like what happened on Saturday).
Youre a gambler.
You don’t think I don’t know this?
They say 99.99% of people lose everything.
Thanks for reminding me, Ive only heard it one million five hundred thousand times. Btw whos ‘They’?
The whole thing is rigged:
So? What isn’t ?
Its really difficult.
No shit Sherlock! You have the luxury of consistent income. I have to live with inconsistent every day. Owning a business where entire families were dependant on my success was easier than trading.
If you had bought bitcoin youd be rich now.
Want me to punch you in the face?
Yes but 1% make a fortune, I can show you how, only takes you a hour a day. My cost for tuition is only 1000 a month. You will be making 10x that in no time. I don't normally tell people this but I have coded a secret indicator. No one else has it. Think of the life you will have when you quit your job....
That should make them run a mile, or they will be emailing you Monday morning
First off, I would like to apologize cause I just realized that I came off kind of troll-ish. Not my intention.
Secondly, I would always present myself as a trader and educator. when someone presents their misconception of a trader I would educate them by briefly explaining, "a gambler risks money without knowing the probability of losing the money at risk and is often over leveraged". "A trader risks money, knowing the probability of winning is in their favor." Then mention, that you happen to be a Master Of Probability! Then sit back and watch as he/she tries to consume the lesson bestowed upon them.
Yeah Ive tried that but I just dont have the energy for it anymore. Its actually quite fun hinting that Im thinking of getting into forex, and then sitting back and listening to everyone's ideas strategies and opinions. Best to do this in a group setting when you can sit back and be anonymous rather than a one on one tidal wave of trading analysis from some frenzied know it all
