Nice I may have to put my AT on a full wall. For no other reason than it's cool.
"The day I became a winning trader was the day it became boring. Daily losses no longer bother me and daily wins no longer excited me. Took years of pain and busting a few accounts before finally got my mind right. I survived the darkness within and now just chillax and let my black box do the work."
I have two VPS that I can run. One at speedytradingservers.com which has been great. That one has 2 Xeon cores and 1.5GB RAM. I'm testing the other with my broker. I connect via the remote desktop connection from Microsoft for Mac.
I trade the ES, and have 4 tick and volume charts running some automation (but most of my trading is manual). I haven't seen my CPU usage greater than 11%, and the memory usage is fairly constant around 1.1GB. I don't use this for back testing or optimization, only trading. The nice thing about a VPS is you can scale it up or down depending on one's needs.
If you're considering using a VPS, I'd suggest trying speedytradingservers. It's very easy to setup and inexpensive to experiment with.
EDIT: I should note too, that I like using the Mac laptops because they have mini-display ports, which are necessary to run higher resolution monitors like the 2560 x 1440 (27 in) or 2560 x 1600 (30 in). Asus ROG laptops have display ports, but among other things, I like the battery life of the Macbook Airs.
Can't you by a new machine with 8 and just plow it with your Win 7 pro disc? It will be harder and
harder to find cool machines with 7 on them in the near future, I would think.
You can rewrite a machine default from Win8 to Win7. Most laptops still come w/ Win7 discs as standard.
I have an HP Folio 9470M w/ a 500GB HDD and 128GB MSATA SSD, 8GB RAM, i7-3667U running Windows 8 Pro 64bit. I also have a custom (read: homemade) desktop with a 256GB Intel SSD running two i7 quad cores with 16GB of RAM and an additional 1TB storage disk with an additional GEforce Nvidia card.
Many thanks to the site and all the contributors. Great source of info.
