I think NT only provides backup reminders, and you cant even do a from-program backup while NT is running - quite poor and useless in real life scenarios IMHO. I've had my workspaces mangled a few times, and had to revert to a much older workspace, and then rebuild what I think I had. It's not fun.
I'm using Backup Maker from https://www.ascomp.de/start . It appears to be free for personal use (I've only used it for a few days now) You can select directories and files + frequency you wish it to back up, ideally IMO to another drive. I back up my \NinjaTrader 7\workspaces directory + config.xml + UI.xml every hour, and on Windows start and exit. I run in a XPx64 environment and it seems to work OK. (Oh, and turn off the report feature, otherwise you get a hourly popup in notepad telling you it's been done.)
I've never come across one. Personally I think an external solution (like the one above) that does this backup is safer & better, in case NT does freeze up or do one of those things that the NT folks never admit it does. Yeah, a better cascading fail-safe backup of all sort of things would be nice for NT8.
True, yes. I've gotten into the habit of doing the save manually, but yeah that level of automation would be nicer from within NT. What this external solution is good for is when NT somehow saves a mangled workspace, one can revert back to a not too old version, to restore any drawings and most other changes.
im saying that your just backing up the same workspace the you launched NT with.. not one that youve been using for however long after making changes to it.. the changes only get saved once you force the save or when you shut down NT and click yes to save..
dont believe anything you hear and only half of what you see
Using WinRAR command line mode, I periodically copy NT's Workspaces and Templates directories, and the Ninjatrader.sdf file. Those include all the things I need to restore from the most frequent issues.
anyone new information on an auto save feature with ninjatrader 8 that will save your days work at specific intervals ie every hour in case your not in the habit of going in and saving manually. thx
a temporary workaround for those that might need is to create a hot key (found under tools/hot keys/global and create a simple save function sequence of hotkeys) this is helpful unless you forget :-)
A slightly tangential approach - there is software available that does this sort of thing for 'everything' in Windows. Iirc one called 'savemycache'. Objective being if Windows crashes you easily get back to where you were (which would include where you were with Ninja i.e. if Ninja crashed not Windows you could just restore the whole shebang). Sorry can't be more specific but Google is your friend.
Saving Workspaces - a heads up on saving Workspaces frequently and the NT Workspaces Recovery feature. It can get big. My Workspace is @ 20mb iirc. If you save daily, that's 2Gb after 6 months so you'll want to be aware to include in housekeeping.
