Why people are misinformed and don't know the facts
Sure, most Americans are uninformed without question. It's become a cultural thing to care more about a celebrity scandal instead of important things. But the media is behind that. Look at how media and journalism in particular has changed in the last 50 years, it's not just the format or technology but its the agenda behind the message.
Journalists went from wanting to get the real story, to being told what the story is and what they can or cannot say by their bosses, the media giants, which control basically every word spoken or printed that winds up in front of Americans when they believe they are viewing "the news".
All for profit news orgs are biased towards ratings and advertising dollars which results in a skewed and biased presentation and subject matter. Some are worse than others. Most viewers prefer infotainment over informative unbiased news. Its an unfortunate situation but that is the reality today.
Most often I avoid any sort of political debate, but occasionally I will point out how little criticism someone has for their own tribe/party vs the opposition in hopes of waking them up.

This is why a hand full of ppl want to abandon free communication in the internet with SOPA etc. (not only bloody dictatorships like Iran, Northkorea or China) and try to hunt down free speech activists like Aaron Swartz to set a sign.
Very clear for me. They fear their folks when they can have real and true information and make up their own minds themselves.
