I think the answers lie (for most save the dysfunctional brains) in education and the willingness to obtain it. In the mathematics of probability and statistics and the search for higher plane qualities: moderation, self-restraint, accountability and discernment to name a few.

If the average man on the street had a thorough yet elementary grasp of the workings of probability and just how ridiculous and stacked against him these machines are, provided he is free from chemical influence and clear headed. I can't help but see these voluntary tax machines dwindle, approaching nonexistence.

My wife's aunt had or has a gambling problem. Her and her husband filed bankruptcy due to it. A hard working person very punctual, thoughtful and caring. Never attended college. Drove a school bus for some years and now runs the bus company’s office solving bus related issues and problems arising from sick kids to bus accidents etc. I have known her for 29 years and I don't feel she has even the slightest idea of the dictates of probability or the street business sense needed to discern the advantage over her.

This is not to say she has no ability to grasp this knowledge. Just that she was never trained or in the position to obtain it.

I think it's this....
Question is how to combat other than abstinence

I'm stumped. The only thing I can come up with is to re-direct towards behaviors that also reinforce on a variable schedule of reinforcement. That however is easier said than done, and may simply lead to an addiction in addition to gambling.
