Well, if you are alone on that thinking, you are not now. Good food for thought, and given my very limited time these days (our 2nd baby on the way, among other things), I welcome such a approach.
I had built computers before, and while it was time-consuming to ensure the components satiated my needs, were compatible and within my budget, the computer lasted a very long time. And, it was sort of fun, times are different now... I retired it simply because it was no longer up to task for the increased demands that it would see years later...
Having a warranty would be nice. That said, this comes from a guy who voids warranties on new cars within days or weeks of purchase. I see stuff I don't like or can improve upon, and out it goes. I had an idea for a different intercooler, drew something-up, and now it's being sold. Of course it's on my car, voiding my warranty, lol. Just one of several things that voided the manufacturer's warranty years ago... That's my nature, so in an ideal world for me, I'd prefer to build or modify. Life is not in a vacuum, so I'd strongly consider doing as you recommend...
Poocher - thanks for the link. That is one busy forum...

Hi TonyB,
After reading some good advice from everyone here, I ended up just sticking with my Dell T3500 for now. Sorry, I meant to update this. I too am a Mac guy and use an iMac for internet and email but still fantasize of using a Mac for my trading as well but it seems pretty complicated at this point.
Please let me know if anyone finds a break through reason for switching to a Mac for a trading computer. I'm all for it provided it makes sense.
PB, thanks for chiming-in. I find it difficult to leave a better machine... Good reviews on the T3500. I'm sensing that I might do the same or similar.
What is ultimately needed, I feel, is a platform, a major one, making a Mac compatible version. It seems that there would be a market, but given that us Mac guys are going the PC route and the efforts needed on their part, this might not happen anytime soon... PC, here I come.
you should also look at the HP Z class workstations... they would be my second choice, ahead of dell... and I have had, and still own, both... Dell Precision 490... and a HP xw6400... HP is much quieter.. another word of advice, dont buy them new... go to the HP or DELL outlet and buy them returned or dinged during transport at significant discounts..
Gosh, I'm quite sure HP doesn't have physical outlets. Sorry, I was rushing to get some yardwork done during that post... I will check-out that link tonight, and periodically too. If I want to run to run 4 monitors, I'll need to add or replace the video card, I would think. If you have some recommendations there, kindly share. I will also search the forum here for such a discussion. Thanks again.
I am going to upset a lot of people on the forum with the following comment, more than likely... but you dont need a fancy video card... financial apps are 2D, not 3D.. getting a super duper video card is not needed... so a pair of NVS300 or a single NVS420 would more than do it.. or if your screens are newer with display ports look at the NVS295/450 ... I would rather put money into a PCIe SSD 80-120GB for the app and os... so make sure to get a tower and not a SFF.. I like OCZ for the PCIe SSD..
Indeed, everything is there, thank you for sharing this info.
I see quite a few z800's on the Worskstation tab ranging from a little over 2k up to 8. What's the main difference/s between the Z's (200, 400....)? The Z800 price is a bit more than I what I was wanting to spend at this point... Thanks again.
