Rmember to still run a fan. With those amount of power a lot of electronics gets hot. Watercooling or not for the CPU - the RAM and the power regulators want some airflow
Since I am not out to set any records, I'll just go with something simple. From what I've read, the Intel water cooling package has been better received than the Corsair H80 or H100. In both cases, it has an active push/pull fan, and there will be a few other Noctua fans in the case as well. Also the H80 won't fit in the case I was planning to use.
Noise is not a primary concern, my system is in the adjacent room -- in the closet with the door open -- and I have a small hole in the wall for all my monitor cables and USB hub.
Let me think what yuo think of the opteron. I am quite pissed at AMD at the moment fo dropping the ball that hard - per core performance is a joke right now. THe next upgarde due this summer... saldy won't fix that and then Intel gets the 22nm processors out - that really puts AMD behind the loop. Low cost seems their only left place for the moment.
I'm mostly interested in multi-core hardware for virtualization, but I'm very interested in everyones testing results. Its greatly appreciated! I suspect NinjaTrader will only improve over time regarding multi-core performance.
Have you considered testing using Amazon EC2 or similar? I admit I don't have their available core numbers, but I would think you should be able to run a multi-core test for a couple hours at a reasonable price. Let me know if I can help.
I agree Bulldozers performance specs are a little disappointing but the upside is you will be able to swap in a Piledriver CPU in the same AM3+ socket. Where as this isn't always possible with Intel. I was Pro AMD in the distant past and leaning that way today because I like competition for Intel and because of Intels business practice to restrict which features (vPro) are available on which CPUs rather than all their CPUs supporting the same features. Its just a pain in the ass. I also lean toward ATI/AMD video cards.
Bottom line is I could build a quad G34 Opteron 6174 (Magny Cours) for less than I could build a dual LGA2011 Xeon E5-2687W.
The quad Opteron will perform better than the E5-2687W based on everything I have read.
I went with Magny over Interlagos because using the board I purchased and a custom bios from [H]ardForum, I can overclock it, probably around 20-30% based on what most other people are posting. This will give me a good amount of additional headroom. Whereas the E5-2687W cannot be overclocked.
I would never overclock a true server (like the 2687W being built for futures.io (formerly BMT)). But since this quad opty will act as my workstation, it is fine.
I will run through some Ninja and MultiCharts tests and report back.
You way is good, if you need ONE multicore system with one operating system...
I go the oher way, i pay "used" big commercial ~2years old out of leasing 7HE ibm blade centers... 14blades a 4cores a 3ghz with own 8..16GB-Ram and harddisks give a cpu power of 56 real 3ghz cores or with HT the 112cores
