Hi @wldman. I used synergy for awhile across multiple screens, but my experience was less than favorable. Most of the time it worked well but about once a week or so the mouse would freeze requiring a reboot. I didn't want this trading futures.
If you have problems with it and want a more permanent solution you could consider a multi-head graphics card. Once I put these in and didn't have to mess around with Synergy I was very happy and not had one single problem since. I'm using this:
So for 4 screens you would need one of these and two for 8 screens. Make sure you have 2 PCI-e slots. I only have one of these and 2 x 2 gaming cards for 8 screens. I could do this because my motherboard has 3 PCI-e slots and had the gaming cards anyway. You could also use 2 x2 existing video/gaming cards for 4 screens if you have 2 x PCI-e slots. This would be the cheapest solution and Windows 7 handles it flawlessly.
Fairly basic, but it works for me. The white metal chair is gone and I now have a HAG H04.
Pricey but worth it.

Yeah, most of the time it's very serene and quiet, ideal for trading really.
Here's a shot I took once at the end of a trading session...
