i have 6 monitors (1440 X 2560) connected to my machine, turned vertical
i use an AMD firepro W600 special graphics accelerator card
with an intel i7 4960 CPU (6 cores) running windows 8.1 64 bit
with 32 Gb, corsar DDR3,
samsung 256 GB SSD 840 Pro, and 2 X 2 TB hard disks

the machine is laser beam fast
i rarely see the cpu going over 15%
before i had 3 screens on my laptop, and it was swapping like hell, took 2,3,4 seconds to take an order
it allows me to follow easily 3 instruments simultaneously
i don't trade simultaneously,
but i look for entries simultaneously
i use audible alerts (synthetic spoken message, to warn me of setup coming near)

I have four 30" monitors 2560x1600 that I use for trading daily, although I must admit, they are connected to three different box's.
First box, one monitor, for VPN and monitoring colo box's. Second box, two monitor's, main trading computer, third box, one monitor, email, browsing, itunes, IM etc.
I have a fifth 30" monitor on a fourth computer that I use in a sim enviroment only.
I remember a friend of mine telling me years ago about having two monitors and how great it was...didn't think much of the idea but then bought another one and shortly thereafter went to six.
I've been using five nowadays because the sixth wasn't all that necessary for me.
Even if I didn't trade I would want at least two....
I have 3 monitors. (2) 23" @ 16:9 and (1) 22" @ 16:9.
22" is used for browser, excel trade log, etc. One 23" is used for main trading app/charts and the other 23" is used for Forex platform and OneNote to journal.
