Hi guys,
long story short - which processor will be better 8 core amd fx 9590 or 4 core i7 4790? I am using now 2 core i7 on my laptop and when i open two platforms my laptop is about to explode. Whats more i want to record the screen and learn later on from what I recorded ( when coach is live trading ) Thanks!
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
If you already have an i7 and are having problems, it's probably the fault of your platform or indicators.
For example, I am running on an old emergency backup system right now, an i5 3470, because my i7 system literally caught fire recently. And I have approximately 75 charts open with real-time tick-by-tick updates in Sierra Chart, and my average system load is under 20%.
Many other factors will impact the speed of your system :
- how much RAM doe you have ? the more charts you open, the longer history you want to see (= more data), the more memory you use. the moment all your applications are using more memory than the physical memory, your computer will start to "SWAP', swapping means that pieces of not used RAM are put on disk to make them free for other data, this process is 1000x slower than in memory and you will see your HD start working and the result be a much slower machine
- what type of Hard disk do you have ? it makes a big difference if you have a SSD or a traditional hard disk. SSD is nearly as fast as memory, while a physical HDD which consists out of turning plates and a head going back and forward will be 1000X slower.
- there are also still other type of attention points. what other software is running on your server ? but like @Big Mike said, it will most likely not be your central CPU that makes the difference at first.
I do have an 8 corre and i rarely see all cores working. and i see rarely load above 20%
and i run ninjatrader in foreground and i have 3 virtualized instances with each of them a NT inside.
My older Phenom II X4 955 will most likely be able to run Mike's trading platform and a slightly higher CPU usage and probably at slightly slower speeds. Might not be as snappy as Mike's bakckup system, but it will be able to run that with minimal issues.
You gave us very little info to go on, but I second the suggestions made @rleplae in his post. Your most likely culprit is insufficient RAM - if you run out you PC will start caching to the HDD and that slows things down a lot.
Also, how do you laptop fans sound? If the system is insufficiently cooled, the CPU will start throttling itself which causes a big slowdown in performance.
Ok so i use two platforms thinkorswim and tradestation. My laptop has 8gb of ram and ssd drive. When I noticed lags, i opened task manager and cpu usage was over 80% and ram 75%. I even didn't have any charts open! I also saw over 120 prcesses working in background. On my pc there are 60...
Laptop is not loud so I think its not overheating.
Ok, I misunderstood when you mentioned 2 core i7. You are running a dual core i7. I believe all of them have Hyperthreading which effectively gives you 4 cores to work with.
For comparison, I am typing this on my slowest laptop - a i5-3230M 3.2 GB RAM and normal HDD. I have IB TWS open in the background, Chrome with quite a few tabs and some other items. 114 processes and CPU usage bounces between 7 - 24%. RAM is starting to run a little low, but luckily the laptop is not yet caching to the HDD. So really no performance issues to complain about.
Now have a look at the comparison here - Intel Core i7 4610M vs i5 3230M. Not sure which part you have, but a randomly chosen dual core i7 should outperform my pc quite comfortably.
You can try sorting your processes by CPU to see which processes use most of the CPU. Take note of the ones that are in the top 3 and try and google them to see what they do and whether there are any know viruses for those.
Looking good but does there really exist 1600mhz DDR4?
I see that you have an ATX motherboard. If you don't have any plans on upgrading for crossfire maybe a micro atx with a smaller case should be considered? Also be aware that some i7 6700k boxes don't come with any cooler.
I have Thermaltake Frio Extreme in my cart now. I am open for microatx as well.
If you have any suggestions, please do tell. I will pick up computer next week in microcenter ( NY store - Long Island )
Since you are going for a Z170 MB you should go for a ddr4 ram. Regarding the micro atx vs atx I think it's better to go for a micro atx from an esthetic stand point since you won't have as many empty slots as on the ATX, but performancewise it doesn't matter. If you are considering microatx MB then also have a look at smaller chassis.
I would prefer a cpu cooler with a single fan because two fans will generate more noise and you won't really have use of so much cooling unless you plan to overclocking. Be-quiet dark rock 3 is a good choice. Apart from that I think you're good.
There are some high-end parts that you could look at if your budget allows it
SSD: Samsung 850 Pro or Samsung 950 Pro
