Use the Test button to make sure that you are using a correct setup.
If the test fails, your E-mail server setup is incorrect. Correct it according to the
data of your provider (address, protocol, ports, user, password etc).
A necessary precondition is SMTP; quote: "NinjaTrader needs valid SMTP email server that it can use to send outbound emails."
Gmail itself is only your client. So make sure that you have the server-side SMTP functions of your gmail client activated.
These are also the data that NT refers to later on. Gmail help explains the procedure and many common errors/pitfalls.
I have seen some networks (ISPs) where outgoing SMTP is only allowed to their mail relay.
you might check if it's possible to access the SMTP server with a traditional mail client
do you see any information in the log file that gives you a clue in more detail ?
You can also connect into the SMTP server to check the connection (changing the port)
I think it worked for me in the past but now, like @eone, it's not working.
I tried all 3 options available (see https://support.google.com/a/answer/176600?hl=en ), outbound SMTP is allowed, no firewall issues (I can see the Google server's reply in snooping the network card), no luck.
The error message from Ninja is not clear but in the trace file we can see something like this: 2016-05-11 12:43:54:434 ERROR: Failed to send mail: System.Net.Mail.SmtpException: Failure sending mail. ---> System.IO.IOException: Unable to read data from the transport connection: net_io_connectionclosed.

It might a Google security stuff, too secure for 3rd party applications...
So, my dear @choke35 and @rleplae, if you were able to make this works with a Gmail account recently you're welcome to prove it and show how .
Could reproduce the error. As far as I'm concerned, it's definitely an authentication failure.
My other providers don't show this issue, among them also free services like e.g. live.com.
