I was not, but if you read on links that Mike quoted, you will see that he was talking about charging annual fee. Not sure if he decided not to do it, or if he was going to charge it later on. =\
But he was promoting it heavily outside of FIO.
Although they are sometimes hard to manage, what I would suggest is small groups of guys use skype chat like a trading room. The trick is often how to keep things focused, relevant, and germane.
People do not organize to make bandages because the Red Cross gives them away. I understand the "give back" mantra but I find it hard, especially in the last bastion of true capitalism, that someone would go to extraordinary lengths to share because they have been shared with. An hour or two a week and $50 or $100 every time someone links a solid charity seems like my personal boundary.
I always thought there was something a little weird about the guy and am not surprised this happened. I kind of saw it coming. Never went to his room, just what I saw from his posts in other threads. Something just wasn't right.
Here is the thing that was a bit of a tell for me...and I admit to communicating in a way that can "sniff out" where reality or likely diverges from probably not or probably bullshit.
Sometimes there was a big chunk of logic or experiential knowledge that was either left out or referenced in a way that a "pro" would not mention.
For example and how that would relate to me. If I was talking about programing an idea into NT, it would take less than thirteen seconds for a counter party to understand that wldman does not do much programing. He understands the math and how the math looks on a screen. He knows how to interpret and use the math...but if his life depended on talking with the machine, he'd have been dead years ago.
That is not indicting anyone, just saying how I sometimes felt. I wish the kid all the best.
When I started trading stocks, I met a group of folks and we did exactly that. It was very beneficial as we learned to make our way in the markets. We eventually outgrew the need for the group, but several of us have remained friends over the past decade.
Running a thread here is about all I can handle, but I'll give a hearty second for Dan's idea for those who would be interested.
In his room, I said it more than once: If want to shoot, shoot - don't talk.
I asked for his logic if he wants others to learn how to trade and got the answer: he got other charts he looks at. Than I said-HU- the secret sauce you got there and he was laughing but never justify the positions he took.
He did talk a lot as an experience macro market analyzer but his trades as I told him today in his room represented day dreaming, did have the only logic of yesterday high/low and pivots to fade, and today trades were exactly so for large losses to many.
To be clear: He initially told me he was going to charge. When I told him that he would not be allowed to mention his room on FIO (vendor self-promotion), he later said he would make it free instead.
This is not my first rodeo -- other vendors have also had "free" rooms where they used FIO to promote themselves and gain a large following, then they flip the switch and start charging or approaching their followers for payments.
Anyone can do what they want (pay, don't pay) - but I don't allow people to use the site in this way as I feel it goes directly against what the site stands for.
@BigMike
You did the very right thing that was needed to keep the forum the best forum out there
They are so many vendors who come here in pesudo names but they do get caught out as their main objective from day one was to promote but lately you'd have seen they are getting bit clever
The Forum rocks and will continue to rock not just because of the members but the way you manage it and with your excellent rules.
Chin up and I can say for other members they are right behind you
