Just to point out, those using Google to search FIO will need to know that Google does not have access to more than half our content -- Elite content, some would say the best content on the site -- so please keep that in mind.
I put this poll in place because we are going to improve to search, and I wanted to get a general feel of a starting point from people.
usually ask in chat. When I was a noob I just started a new thread and @Big Mike would close my redundant thread and paste all the relevant possibilities. After a few weeks I answered the clue phone and started with the search bar.
Most of the time I use Advanced Search by post, often with a username selected along with the keywords. This is generally because I remember (or think I do) that a particular person wrote something on a topic, and I want to go through the possible posts to see if I can find it.
Sometimes I will use the "type right in the Search box" option, usually because I faintly remember there once was a thread on something and I'm trying to find it by its title. This works pretty well if I remembered it right.
Since I've been on FIO for a good long time, I do often have a recollection of having seen something that I want to find again. When I'm just looking to see if there's something on a particular topic and I don't remember anything about it, I will still usually use Advanced Search because of its flexibility. However, the main Search box can be very handy if the thread title contains my search terms.
I put down "Advanced Search post view" in the poll. If I could have only one option, this would be it. The thread view is one I don't generally use, because just finding out there is a thread with my search term is too broad. I want to zoom down to the post.
I've only used the Theadloom search a couple of times. I remember not liking it (can't quite remember why), but perhaps this is just the old dog/new tricks problem.
I use the search box the most for high level searches. However, I use the advanced search within a thread or the attachment search when I happen to remember where I saw a post or attachment. The attachment search and searching by user name are the most useful within a thread.
Given you can use one type of search to do things that the other search won't do, it really depends on what I'm looking for.
For example, if you are looking for a YouTube video which was embedded in the post you want to put the tag [YOUTUBE] in the Advanced search but not the Threadloom search because the latter will return anything with the word YouTube in it.
I probably need to create a thread with all the tips for this.
Good idea @xplorer please do.
I can be quite lazy and if I cant find what I need using the main search box I just give up. A thread with tips and tricks on regex search functionality would help.
