I've opened account with IBKR for practicing purposes.
Is their BookTrader OK for training how to read/trade the order book or is it too basic?

Depends on the market, Futures market the order book matches the book on the CME(Globex). The Forex is accurate and fills as requested.

Mainly commodity futures.

It is a pitiful excuse for a ladder, but it does the job. I won't use it anymore, under any circumstances, especially given IB's awful data, but in a pinch, it will let you buy and sell, assuming IB isn't having a technical issue.
