80% of CFD Brokers Planning Futures Pivot as Regulatory Pressure Mounts

A new survey by Acuiti for CME Group reveals that 4 in 5 European CFD brokers not currently offering listed products are either planning to or actively considering adding futures and options to their platforms.

Survey Highlights:
  • 62% of CFD brokers are "very concerned" about future regulatory restrictions on retail CFD access
  • Only 8% expressed no concern about regulatory changes
  • European retail broker revenues grew from 2.3B EUR (2021) to 3.4B EUR (2025)
  • US competition intensifying as Robinhood expands into Europe

The Driving Forces:

Acuiti notes: "Restrictions on offering OTC instruments to retail clients are growing, the sophistication of retail investors is increasing, and new competition is coming from US retail brokers who specialize in futures and options."

The $1.5 billion Kraken acquisition of NinjaTrader was explicitly designed to accelerate this shift, bringing crypto exchange infrastructure into traditional futures markets.

What This Means for Traders:

If you're currently trading CFDs with European brokers, expect platform changes. Brokers will likely:
  • Add futures and options products alongside existing CFD offerings
  • Potentially phase out or restrict CFD access depending on regulatory developments
  • Partner with or white-label from established futures infrastructure providers

The shift to exchange-traded products means more transparency in pricing and execution, but potentially different margin requirements and trading mechanics than CFD traders are accustomed to.
