CME Group's metals complex reached a new single-day record of 3,338,528 contracts on January 26, 2026 -- up 18% from the previous record.

Growing demand for CME Group's precious metals contracts drove the record trading day, with Micro Silver futures trading a daily record volume of 715,111 contracts and establishing record open interest of 35,702 contracts.

Record-Breaking Numbers:
  • Total metals complex: 3,338,528 contracts (Jan 26)
  • Previous record: 2,829,666 contracts (Oct 17, 2025)
  • Micro Silver single-day volume: 715,111 contracts (record)
  • Micro Silver open interest: 35,702 contracts (record)

Natural Gas Also Hit Records:
Earlier in the week (January 20), CME's natural gas complex reached a new single-day record of 2,576,346 contracts -- up 15% from the previous record of 2,239,081 contracts set in November 2018.

2025 Annual Results:
CME Group also reported record annual average daily volume of 28.1 million contracts for 2025, up 6% year-over-year. Q4 2025 ADV reached a record 27.4 million contracts.

Market Context:
The record trading comes as:
  • Spot gold surpassed $5,500 in overnight trading this week
  • Silver is up 15% year-to-date
  • Gold extended last year's 65% gains
  • Geopolitical uncertainty drives safe-haven demand

What This Means for Traders:
This volume surge reflects both retail participation (driven by Micro products) and institutional hedging. The record open interest in Micro Silver suggests traders are holding positions longer, not just day trading. High volume generally means tighter spreads and better fills -- if you trade metals futures, liquidity has never been better.

The natural gas record may signal positioning ahead of weather-related volatility as winter continues.
