Weekend Update: First Qatari LNG Transit Attempted -- IRGC Threatens 'Heavy Assault' on US Bases

Saturday brought contradictory signals that will set the tone for Sunday night's energy market open.

The Bullish Signal: First Qatari LNG Tanker Approaches Hormuz -- Reuters, Iran International, Straits Times (May 9)

LNG tanker Al Kharaitiyat (211,986 cubic meters capacity, Nakilat Shipping Qatar) departed Ras Laffan terminal Saturday en route to Port Qasim, Pakistan -- heading directly toward the Strait of Hormuz. Iran approved the passage as a confidence-building measure with Qatar and Pakistan, both acting as war mediators, per Reuters sources.

Context: This would be the first Qatari LNG transit through Hormuz since the war began February 28. On April 6, Iran halted two Qatari tankers (Al Daayen and Rasheeda) without explanation. Saturday's approval is qualitatively different -- Iran explicitly coordinating safe passage.

The Pakistan angle: Islamabad has been negotiating with Iran to allow limited LNG transits due to an urgent domestic gas shortage. Iran agreed to assist, with both sides coordinating the first vessel under Pakistan's Qatar supply agreement.

The Bearish Signal: IRGC Threatens 'Heavy Assault' on US Bases -- AP / PBS (May 9)

Iran's Revolutionary Guard navy warned Saturday that any further attacks on Iranian oil tankers would trigger a "heavy assault" on a US military base in the region and enemy vessels. This warning came 24 hours after the US struck two Iranian tankers (M/T Sea Star III and M/T Sevda) that tried to breach the naval blockade. Trump called the strikes a "love tap" and insisted the ceasefire was intact.

Bahrain Arrests 41 IRGC-Linked Individuals -- Al Jazeera, Gulf News (May 9)

Bahrain -- home to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet -- arrested 41 people alleged to have direct contact with Iran's IRGC, collecting funds "to support terrorist operations," per its Interior Ministry. Iran responded with a warning: "Siding with the US-backed resolution will bring severe consequences. The Strait of Hormuz is a vital lifeline; do not risk closing it on yourselves FOREVER."

Putin's Uranium Offer Still Active

Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed Saturday that Moscow's proposal to remove Iran's enriched uranium stockpile (~440kg at 60% enrichment) as a settlement mechanism remains on the table.

Status Heading Into Sunday Night Open
  • Tehran MOU response: Still pending -- 48+ hours overdue from Friday deadline
  • Ceasefire: "Fragile but holding" per CENTCOM
  • Qatari LNG transit: In progress -- watch for confirmation of passage
  • IRGC threat level: Elevated -- explicit base strike threat on record
  • Brent Friday close: $101.29 (-6% on week per CNBC)
  • WTI Friday close: $95.42

Trading Angle: The Al Kharaitiyat transit outcome is the binary to watch Sunday evening. A confirmed Hormuz passage signals Iran can selectively open the strait -- oil continues lower. A blocked or reversed transit = CL/BZ gap higher in thin Sunday trade. Both signals are live simultaneously.
