Morning all.
Here's my daily pre-market global indices overview for Thu Jul 16:
* For Wednesday, July 15, the S&P 500 added 0.37% to 7,572, a steady close with almost no open-to-close drama. The Nasdaq did a little better, up 0.62% to 26,269, keeping the U.S. tape tech-led into the overnight handoff.
* Korea was the air pocket: the Kospi closed Thursday down 6.37% at 6,820, after sidecar curbs were triggered and leveraged products tied to SK Hynix and Samsung reportedly amplified forced flows; the Bank of Korea also hiked 25 basis points to 2.75%, citing inflation, FX volatility, outflows, and the equity correction.
* Japan’s Nikkei fell 2.79% to 66,835, with chip-linked names hit despite strong TSMC numbers and ASML’s better outlook — because apparently “good fundamentals” took the overnight shift off.
* Mainland China also sold off, with the Shanghai Composite down 1.85% to 3,882, while Hong Kong went the other way, the Hang Seng up 1.32% to 25,008.
* In Europe, Germany’s DAX came in off a 0.58% prior-session decline as Thursday trade gets underway. At 5:59 a.m. New York time, S&P 500 futures are down about 0.2%, and crude futures are roughly flat, off 0.1% near $79.50, so the U.S. open is set to test whether Asia’s semiconductor and Korea-specific stress stays local or spills into megacap tech.
Cheers,
Jason
