Personally I obtained the beta version of Windows 10 a long time ago, which came with a license key. Then they migrated me to the "Insider" program where they gave me a new permanent license key.
I'm not sure what the process would be now that it is out of beta.
Bit the bullet and upgraded my trading laptop to Win 10. Awesome!! Indeed much better than win 8.1 that came with it.
Everything seems to be working fine, no need at all to reconfigure the platforms and such. All worked right off the bat, as if I had simply restarted the computer.
I did the upgrade, took about 1 hour to complete including time to download the ISO (which is about 3Gb in size).
Happy with the results on the laptop, I decided to also upgrade my iMac 27" (which is running win7 via BootCamp), which used to be my primary trading computer, but now is the secondary (the laptop being the primary). All went well during the installation, but after the first restart, the keyboard and some other things weren't working at all. After some googling, I found out that Apple doesn't support win10 on this particular iMac I have. They only support beggining at the late 2012 models, and mine is a mid 2011 model... Oh well.
Used the win10 option to revert back to win7 (also did the upgrade, not a clean install) and this also worked dandy. No configurations were messed up in win7. It was working just as it did before the upgrade with no additional effort.
Lesson to be learned, if you are running a Mac and want to install win10 (or upgrade from win7) via BootCamp, check first if your Mac is compatible!! Here's the Apple page with the list of supported models:
I didn't read this entire thread, but it would be interesting to have an initial post with all the platforms people are running successfully on Windows 10 (and/or issues).
I upgraded one of my machines to Windows 10.
That machine just runs NinjaTrader and StreetSmart Edge (Schwab). Both are working fine so far.
On Windows 10, I'm taking advantage to replace my development notebook.
Just put an order for the HP Folio 1020 G1 as my main travel / development notebook. I upgraded it to 512GB SSD. The guy was able to give me the labor day discount which brought the price from $2877 to $2013 (30% discount for what is worth).
Once I receive and install all my software I will report here if everything work as expected.
Just want to share in case someone wants to follow along. I did a lot of research for a 'fanless' notebook, and this came on top. I run my tests via RDC on my main desktop, so I don't need a lot of power on this one, just a quiet and comfortable environment while enjoying my mocha at Starbucks or programming late night next to my sleeping wife.
I could not resist waiting any longer, so I decided to upgrade all my computers to Windows 10. A better path would be a clean install, but as I’m replacing my hardware in the next few months, I decided to just upgrade every computer.
So far, all my trading platforms seem to be working fine:
