The usual complaints which have been vigorously aired numerous times on this thread. I found something better so Im annoyed at myself for not having taken longer to evaluate the package.
NT is like marmite. You either love it or hate it.
I funded a Dorman/NT account this month in order to take advantage of the $800 price tag for lifetime license. But now I'm on the fence. Not sure whether I really want to or not.
I don't use NT currently, but like it's charting for developing new ideas and I figure why not purchase at a discount and possibly upgrade to multi broker license in the future. I do like it as a charting platform (research/development) but, no, I don't have a specific need for it on live trading bc my stuff is all automated. and I could just use the free version for all testing and essentially have the same result. The only downside would be *possibly* having to pay more for a lifetime license *if* I ever got one in the future.
Now, w the free version I can't run automated systems on a live account but the platform is so hardware intensive that it's not really convenient to run on a leased server anyway....I sure wish NT would make a lightweight app just to run automated systems (in C#/NScript) without all the charting (charting is great for research but not necessary to run systems live).
I have been focusing a lot on getting solid w python lately, and I'm pretty sure that's the best way to go for a system trader, all in all. IB with a python API connection is likely the most secure and effective thing around. I can run it on secure/inexpensive Linux server, develop systems anywhere on any almost any hardware. Complex opti runs are a different matter, but you have to use opti runs only for specific purposes....imo. And python gives me complete control with no middleman (i.e. Charting platform) between me and the broker server.
Soooo....those are my thoughts. Just wondered what anyone else thought.
I think this is the wrong thread but it sounds to me that the difference between buying now or not is 200$. With all the uncertainty you mention ('The only downside would be *possibly* having to pay more for a lifetime license *if* I ever got one in the future. ') I would ask myself: is it worth spending the money now?
I agree, and my conclusion is no. I think that's pretty apparent....just curious if there were other thoughts to consider. I always hate it when I don't consider something I should have.
After several failed attempts (ie. I couldn't get NT8 to operate in a stable manner), I tried again 3 weeks ago and felt I had a fairly simple & stable setup. Btw, what prompted me to do this was that NT7 was becoming less stable.
But this week, I have been getting more freeze ups* (NinjaTrader.exe getting into very high % in Task Manager Processes), even though my charts/workspace is simpler than ever. NT Support are always very helpful & friendly, but this morning, I just thought why bother ?
I have been an NT user since v2, in the days when you always contacted Ray directly about issues (I think before NT offered charting) : when it's working glitch-free, I prefer it over all other platforms. I was a long-time TradeStation user, but dropped it in favour of NT. The only platform that never seems to freeze, which I have only used for simple charts (H4 & D1), longer term FX trading is Metatrader MT4. It's pretty simple & free !
I'm seriously considering looking for a futures broker that offer MT4 (not even sure if there are any) and saying a final goodbye to NinjaTrader, the sophistication of which I no longer need. What I do need is clear charts with very few standard indicators and a DOM... and stability.
So back to my beginning question: how are others doing with stable NT8 operation, please?
* What's been tripping me up this week is what I think is the standard CurrentDayOHL indicator : if I uncheck the Auto scale box, my system freezes for several minutes and the chart will then not show the current price range however I try to manually scale it. I can no longer be bothered reporting the issue .
I'm using NT8 on Windows10 for half a year now and I'm happy with it. I like the new functionality like tabs and I feel it's more stable than NT7. I have 18 charts open continuously and am running my own indicators.
The only annoying thing is that once every couple of months I need to rebuild my workspaces, of which I sincerely hope they will fix this on short term.
The response and quality of support is also great.

My honest opinion is you don't have the proper computer hardware. I have a robust machine and push and run NT8 hard and have absolutely zero issues with NT8 performance.
CPU performance I monitor with Process Hacker and NT8 is never above 12% for NT8 (I can monitor each app separately) once running and connected to data.
Booting up NT8 it's CPU % hit 80% at times. As I said I run NT8 hard in my business.
