At this point I can live without eyefinity as I'm guessing this cable isn't active but I won't complain if I can have it as I occasionally play Call of Duty Black ops.
Yes, I have two of those on each of my NVS 295 cards, four total, 15ft each. They are excellent quality, as is always the case with monoprice and have worked perfectly.
After all my digging, that seems to be the way to go and it gives me potentially 6 monitors from one card but without the active adapters I wont get eyefinity working. I can live with that. If I want to convert it to an eyefinity gaming rig later it,s just a matter of changing the cables.
Edit: Mike is there some info on your current setup floating around on here somewhere? Link please? From our discussions in the past we appear to have similar tastes in computers
Any other comments/idea's on the rest of the spec list?
i7 920 overclocked to 4ghz on air
12gb
3ware 9690-sa with 4x750gb in a raid 10
2xnvs 295
4xacer 22's (bad choice)
The i7 was built a long time ago, January or February 2009. I've been meaning to do an upgrade but just haven't had any time. Was originally built with geforce 9500gt's but the fans were dying a few months ago so I replaced with 2xnvs 295's which I bought for less than $90 total on amazon and ebay.
Also have a q6600, 8gb, 8x1tb raid 6, 1xgf430 for my media center server
Here is my similar discussion on an aussie tech forum. Spec list is pretty much sorted so I thought I'd post the link here in the hope it might help others too.
The Acer had good Newegg reviews when I bought it, and was cheap. But I later realized people were just happy with the value of the monitor, meaning good for the money. What I need is good for any money kind of monitor, I am sitting in front of them so much that this is not an area where you want to cheap out.
I would also pay close attention to heat dissipation on my next purchase. Even with just four monitors, it really heats up the area about 1-2 feet directly in front of the monitor, which is of course where I am sitting. When I replace these one day, I'll go with either 6 or 8 monitors and try to buy the best I can afford.
I have generally stuck to Samsung monitors as I have always found them nice to look at and never had a dead pixel or failure. I have probably bought over a dozen for myself or building for others.
Maybe you should buy one of the new Samsung 6 monitor arrays :P
Turns out my current case isn't big enough to fit an ASUS 6950 (lucky I measured it) so I'm open to some case recommendations. I don't mind full size cases but I'll need I/O ports at the front/top edge of the case to fit under my desk.
I'd recommend going to newegg and viewing them there. Narrow it down to 2 or 3 choices, read the reviews, and then google the case plus the word review and you'll likely find a few sites or blogs who have done in-depth reviews with more pictures and comments, so you can make a good decision.
Buying just the perfect case is kind of a ritual for me
As for quiet - most of the noise will come from any case fans, GPU fans, CPU fans, etc. It is worth the extra money (to me) to get top of the line fans to keep things quiet. All my fans are Noctua and I am very pleased with them, the best fan I've ever used in 20+ years of building computers.
For GPU I would try to get a passive card, trading computers don't need fast cards - cool and quiet is better. The ASUS 6950 is a monster gaming card... way, way over kill for a trading machine. You can find the nVidia Quadro NVS 295 with 2xDisplayPort on ebay for less than $50. If you have four monitors you need two of these.
