I've been using the Office 2010 beta from Microsoft for a long time now, and it expires on Halloween so I thought this might be my perfect opportunity to ditch Microsoft and go to OpenOffice. That really doesn't bother me much, as I very rarely use Office, just some Excel worksheets that are pretty simple so I imagine OpenOffice has no problem with them.
What bothers/concerns me is Outlook. I live in email all day, I have many accounts and something like 300k emails in Outlook (I unfortunately lost my mail about 3 years ago, so that's only a few years worth). I've used Outlook for around 15 years. I think the only thing I've ever used besides Outlook was probably Eudora around 15 years ago.
Tonight I downloaded Thunderbird from Mozilla, and I am happy to report it is fantastic! I really like the tabbed account views, it seems to be multi-threaded and well suited to managing multiple accounts at once. The search seems fast and capable, and I like the client view options. So I am pleasantly surprised! And I just discovered there are add-ons to Thunderbird similar to add-ons for Firefox, so that is quite interesting, I'll have to check those out!
It is still syncing accounts... it's about 50% through (150k downloaded, 150k to go from various accounts) but I like it so far.
I won't install OpenOffice until all my mail is transferred and I can stop using Outlook, then uninstall Office 2010 beta. Hopefully tomorrow.
Anyone else using Thunderbird? Anyone using OpenOffice?
I've used Open Office since it came out (when ever that was) and really like it.
However, there is one problem. NT puts a ' in the front of numbers when exporting from NT to the Open Office Calc spreadsheet. Since you are not using NT and there is currently no MC beta (I PM'ed with Stan about doing some testing of MC when the next version is out) I'd be interested to see how MC handles outputs of the Trade Reports.
As far as Thunderbird I used to use it, after I lost a ton of emails from Outlook when I migrated to Win 7 pro. Finally settled on Gmail. As it is an IMAP vs. POP question. I like having everything centrally located. So, Gmail is like having my office anywhere I go.

Well my migration from Outlook to Thunderbird is complete, as is my migration from Office to OpenOffice. Office 2010 beta has been uninstalled (ironically, there was an "unknown error" during uninstallation, and it's still half baked... but that's Microsoft for you).
So far I really am impressed with Thunderbird. As for OpenOffice, ugh... it's really hard to re-learn a new interface, I was actually very used to the Ribbon interface and knew my way around Excel 2010. Now I can't even figure out how to add a forecasting linear regression trendline to my OpenOffice charts.... I will have to Google it.
