The performance improvements are huge when you have a lot of open charts with a lot of stuff on them. NT7 would start limping. This has been a big difference. Also, when you make any changes to the chart it updates more or less instantly. This has not been that big a difference except when you tinker with your charts a lot, which I do.
I suggest you not give too much attention to the crosshair issue . Yes, it was dumb, but it's fixed, at least mine is. You never can tell if everyone will see the change, which is certainly something to give some attention to.
It **is** worth giving attention to the slow pace of improvements. My friend @ratfink has pointed out that they also seem to have rushed out changes without proper Quality Assurance testing, so we have the paradox of slowly releasing rushed changes. Life can be funny sometimes.
As to needing to be customized, well, NT7 was famous for not having things out of the box, and needing to have someone write some custom code to add them. Generally this is available for free in the free indicator section, at least for basic stuff. Not much change there, actually.
Oh, and the thing about not supporting some brokers is very simple. NT bought a broker and now operates in competition with the firms it used to support. So, except for a few, they no longer have the same business relationship. It would be surprising if they did.
I think overall it is a mixed bag, but then everything is.
As mentioned in a thread that's really about Sierra charts, I'm looking for a basic OHLC indicator. I would like it to plot
- Open
- High
- Low
- Close
For each trading day. For tomorrow/current live day, I'd like it to plot …
Also, a swing indicator resetting at the start of each trading session. PAS is perfect except that it doesn't reset. I have one indicator for NT7 which does that.
Sorry for the slow reply. I was exploring platforms before I ever really got started. I liked NT7 alright as a beginner especially. I was interested in algorithmic trading but didn't really have a strong background in programming, so the scenario builders in NT7 were attractive.
I eventually got used to MultiCharts .NET and now I really like it. C# for programming algos is a very powerful tool, but it has a steep learning curve. The only complaint I have about MultiCharts is that it can be rather buggy. I'm not sure how much of a problem that is with other platforms though. MultiCharts' support is also a bit of a black hole at times.
.... so, full disclosure: I've had a few Maker's I've lurked on here for awhile... I just want to give back.
NT8 is a HUGE disappointment. I waited a long time for this product, "hoping" I could compete with TT traders. Not even close. Here's the "bourbon-fueled" truth: use NT free with the cheapest broker you can find, to place your trades. Use NT for charting and off Market testing. But, if you are going to place more than 5 trades intra-day, you need better execution than NT can provide. Period.
My first career was in application development. The truth is you have to write some really "tight" code if you are using .NET for trading. If you don't have a sub 50ms return from your broker, you need to co-locate and use an alternative execution method (i.e. Jigsaw) or choose another platform.
The rant: I'm so sick of dealing with support that has less experience with the platform than me. Waste three hours dealing with them, let them connect to your PC , where you might be managing other peoples $$$... (for them tell you: hmmm , never seen that before. Must be Market Conditions... let us know if it gets worse). Mirus was so solid... frankly, the current NT is worse than a FX CFD. Why do I continue? I have a cheaper cost that was grand-father in vs. the FX spread.
Ice has melted, repsond and I'll be REALLY honest....
Hi TeHuff.... I have a lot of similar feelings, but I am sticking with 8. during the 1st 6mo it was tough for sure and I was ready to go back to 7, but working with others in here and reading between the lines of what NT support was saying, I was able to stabilize it. It has been good for about a year now...no crashes, no hangs, memory well controlled. However, I have friends that have memory builds, crashes, hangs. Do you have any ideas on why one persons system runs great and another has so many problems? We have gone through setups, .Net revisions, Windows setups and security settings... I would really like to help my friends...
... Bob, I can't really comment specifically without more details. But, I can give you some more detail on what improved my performance. Bare in mind, I have solid infrastructure (e.g. clean Windows 10 install, water-cooled, SSD RAID 0, 32GB dedicated PC, clean broadband internet - sub 55ms to trade execution servers).
Load the SuperDOM in it's base config, viewing market depth set to (8) and no more than (3) instruments, tabbed. Load as few as charts as possible, I usually have less than (8) open. Use minute intervals when you can. And, use only the base indicators (NT support always blames custom indicators).
I have a high-performance gaming Ethernet card. Given the overall capability of the my PC, I tuned the Ethernet card and Windows 10 settings to basically let the hardware do all the packet processing. Not sure I would recommend this... it takes some experience to do this type of tuning.
My SuperDOM is functioning now, albeit with just basic functionality.
The operative word is patience...I went through the same bad experiences when NT7 first came out but I just kept my mouth shut because I knew NT had me by the balls. Why? There just isn't another retail platform that is anywhere close to NT in terms of functionality..err..when it functions The things (i.e., programming implementations) I can do with it are amazing.
I'm running NT8 live with very few problems. This time around I was very careful what I put into NT8. I hand-built all of my custom indicators and I carefully watch any indicators that I add to see whether they will break the platform. I'm sure NT will eventually get their act together. They did so with NT7. You just have to have patience and be careful what you put in it.
I had some big performance issues yesterday, with displayed price lagging well behind reality.... I know that because I got a stop filled notice several bars ** before** the price chart showed that price had even reached my stop. Uh oh. (These were volume, not time, bars, and it was right at the ES RTH open, a high-volume time.)
After venting a bit (actually, a lot) in my journal, I came to think that I should just reduce all the work I was asking NT to do, in terms of calculating indicators and displaying many (many, many) charts. I'm sure I will find and maintain a better balance. And there is just no need to put up a lot of stuff I'm not going to be watching all the time, anyway.
With that said, I do have to cut back on my initial enthusiasm for NT8, which I recently gushed about right after switching over to it. I think a lot of care will still need to be taken, in terms of keeping charts fairly non-elaborate, and few, at least for the time being.
I too have had instances where the DOM is lagging behind the chart or vice versa. This happens as you say during high volume time slots. I don't always know which one is leading. In some cases, whilst referring to a live website feed, both the DOM and the Chart are both lagging, albeit offset. Sometimes it is like the transactions are being buffered and then splurted out in batches.
I have a solid internet connection, but having switched provider a few weeks ago I thought it could be that. If it is a NinjaTrader issue, and it has (or is) happening to you too (and others), then my concern for this issue just got greater.
I end up restarting NT8, or sometimes rebooting the PC and it appears to resolve the issue. However, by that time perhaps the high volume of transactions has subsided and normal operation has resumed that NT8 can cope with.
Mmmm, a bit more investigation required. Not laying blame anywhere....for now.

I've had a bit of what both of you point to in terms of issues. Since the new release of 13.1, I've only had the lag problem once, and I've now determined that it's a third-party indicator. Once removed, the problem disappeared. I am using N8, full-steam ahead, but I'm still not completely sure that all the snafus have been resolved. It's wait-and-see, but for now, all is well. I definitely sympathize with those still struggling with the platform; it can be beyond frustrating. I just keep pecking away at the issues, though, and they seem to be drying up, at least for me.
