It's working correctly, because with your settings the YM contract is used for historical data and the NQ for real-time, hence the gap down. When merging different data sources, each need to be the same instrument. For example IQFeed ES for historical, and ZenFire ES for real-time data. Uncheck the option 'merge data source' to just display one contract.
This honestly haven't happened to me once. Could it be that you accidentally installed two versions of MC .NET, the first one the 32bit and the second one the 64bit (or vice versa)? That might explain why after the update the files could not be located.
I wish you more luck with your next adventures on MC .NET .
**********************************************************************************
I've been using MC for about 3 years now and have never lost, studies, data or workspaces when updating to a newer version. I also back them up every week or so , "just in case".. I currently use Ver8 64 bit build 5622..
So I did not post in vain, as you explained that this was a user error. I did not find that section of the help file, and so I mistook the option to merge data from different sources for an option to display merged backadjusted data.
Definitely not a bug, but a user error, as I did not understand the feature.
Anyhow I had succeeded in creating a merged backadjusted contract, which was correct and which I had checked for the rollover offset.
The current build is 5826. What happens if you check for update, will MC tell you that you have the latest release installed?
How would you update from 5622 to 5826?
I only did the update, because I assumed that after a new release such as MC .NET 8.0 there are some changes that may have been introduced after the release.....
Ah yes, then you probably intended to make a Custom Future.
Yes, if you have the latest build it says "You're currently using the latest version of MultiCharts".
If you don't have the latest version,I thought that the 'check for update' option will direct you to the site where you can download the latest version if there's one (sptrader can perhaps confirm this).
By downloading the file, closing MultiCharts and all its processes, running the executable, installing MultiCharts in the same directory as the previous install (probably C:\Program Files\TS Support\MultiCharts\), and after the update finishes, restart MultiCharts.
So far, with all updates I've done this gave the new MultiCharts with the old settings and workspaces (i.e. like nothing changed).
If there are new features, it will be communicated through their blog with full changelog etc. There also will be a sticky forum topic for it, so hard to miss. The build updates between these versions are to fix errors or crashes (as I understand it).
You probably don't need to update to every new build (I don't), as long as you don't have a big problem off course. But then you'll probably have already had contact about this with MC Support, and they will let you know if this is fixed/will be fixed in a new build.
can you point me to a software that has a less painful way of adding symbols?
ps. if you enter "NQ" into QM, instead of "NQU2", QM will show all the NQ contracts available to you, including the expired ones, and you can add them all at once.
Sorry, the second pain was a leftover from copy and paste, so it was just a phantom, I have deleted that part of my sentence now. Adding symbols is always tricky, you are right. NinjaTrader has the most frequent symbols pre-configured, so you can start right away. Here you need to add the individual contracts and to find the correct exchange.
On the other hand the option for volume rollover and the organization of session templates is gradually better than for NinjaTrader. However, I like that NinjaTrader allows me to select rollover date and offset manually.
I think it is me. This is just the typical process of learning how to use something and understanding the details. I have now configured my custom futures and they are correctly displayed.
I could not select them via "Format Instruments", because the tab "Custom Futures" was half-hidden and I did not see it. So I searched for them under "Futures". It is just a bit counter-intuitive, if you do not understand, how it works, but so far it works.
MultiCharts support has been quite responsive and explained to me how to do it correctly.
I will now further test the feature of volume rollover.
Ninjatrader Backup and Restore is definitely more straightforward. But I have come up with several workarounds that should make things easier.
1) I save my workspace file <Save Workspace As> to my Dropbox folder. So it's backed up automatically and if I ever have to reinstall MC, I can point it to my dropbox to get my workspace back.
2) Use the following guide and move your Database and Studies(Indicators) folder to a different drive than C: Drive
I have MC installed to my C Drive but all the DB, indicators & Logs are written to my D: Drive (which is actually a network folder of my NAS drive but any drive or partition will do).
I went from Windows 8 Release Preview to Windows 8 RTM and thanks to the steps above restoring MC to the way I had set it up was pretty easy.
Actually, the default workspace reappeared after another restart of MultiCharts.
The missing instruments can be explained as follows: When installing MultiCharts, the MultiCharts.Net64 Quote Manager is also installed with a separate desk top icon. Starting the Quote Manager from inside MultiCharts is difficult, as the icons are very small. Therefore I had started the QuoteManager externally. However, when starting it externally, all contracts that I had entered including the custom futures have disappeared.
Just need to remember which of the mini icons I have to click ....
