I tried to trigger it. Let me know if you got the email otherwise we will need to time it better. I tested on Gmail, but their image proxy doesn't work with vector images at all, so it didn't break in the first place (as bad as Yahoo).
If you confirm it's good, I'll consider it closed, otherwise have another idea tomorrow.
Continuing trying to unify some of the visual elements, all Site Sponsors will now be listed in Blue Background color with their posts to signify Site Sponsor. They will also appear with a checkmark next to their name to designate it is a verified official account.
I will do the same with regular vendors (non-sponsors) but it's far more complex, I need more time. But I will do it.
For vendors (not site sponsors, but identified vendors) their username is now green, and next to them is a symbol (dollar sign) to indicate they are a paid service provider.
Everyone, we need help identifying vendors in our community. If you find a vendor that is not marked correctly, please:
- Click "report" icon on right of post
- Tell us that the vendor profile field needs to be set
All moderators and myself are able to set the vendor profile fields quickly now. It is not a user settable field due to potential abuse. With vendors, we do try to attempt some level of quick verification that the account is real - but we make no guarantees.
Hi Mike, just a comment on the microphone icon: icons are good, but sometimes text is better. I would never have understood that a microphone means "thread starter," but I never had any trouble understanding the text that the microphone replaces. I imagine that, a few weeks from now, once the post in this thread has faded from my mind, I will have forgotten what the microphone means, as it will have become another obscure picture symbol that I don't recognize.
Possibly it's used in other social media, but I don't read any other social media. And I'm not going to start.
I know that if you hover the mouse over it, it will tell you what it means, but I wouldn't normally do that. Normally I would just skip little pictures I didn't understand because I'm not necessarily that curious what some symbols might mean.... but I would be able to read "Thread Starter" or "Original Poster" easily enough, and would understand right away.
No criticism, just user feedback. I think if you also had some text, not as a popup but just there to be read (incorporated into the icon?), it would make it more understandable. As it is, I think this is less understandable with the icon than it was without.
Honestly, I have the same opinion of the check mark icon also. I would not have had any idea what it means by just looking at it. And, as I'm typing this, I have forgotten what it means and would have to go back to your post to find out. I assume the check means something like "OK," but I don't actually know what it's OK for.... Same goes for the vendor dollar sign, actually. "Vendor" I can understand. Dollar sign, I don't know what it means, really.
I'm glad you're working to improve usability, but I think some of these pictures, by themselves, actually obscure the meaning. If some text were incorporated with the icons, like putting "Thread Starter" under the microphone or something, at least I would have known what it meant the first time I saw it, which is a good idea from a usability standpoint.
Bob.

Edit: a key at the bottom of the page, which shows what each icon means, might help a lot.

As I mentioned in my post, I know it does that. But, as I also mentioned, normally I probably wouldn't have bothered, or thought of it for that matter. If the meaning (OP or whatever) were spelled out with some form of text, it wouldn't be necessary, and would be more clear.
From a usability standpoint, simple and clear are better. That's usually the point of using icons.
Is it a big deal? No.

I wanted to unify the look, it was different icons of different style and color before. I'll continue to think on how to best do it in the limited space we have available.
If anyone has a suggestion on a better visual icon to represent 'thread starter' or 'original poster' than the microphone, let me know. Open to suggestions.
