I have been using NT7 for a while, and I was looking forward to improved stability, fixing the annoying little problems, mult-series capabilities, and improved replay functionality. As far as stability, it crashes just as often as 6.5. And it has all the same annoying problems, e.g. screwed up orders, screwed up position status, screwed up account performance reporting, crappy alert system, crappy market screener, etc. The multi-series seemed like it was going to be cool, but it just doesn't work very well in reality for charting and disretionary trading and for numerous reasons I don't even bother with it at this point. It may be worthwhile for building strategies, but otherwise it's better to simply use two different charts. The only new feature that I find worthwhile is the improved replay, which at the same time is still extremely frustrating because you still have to disconnect and reconnect to another data feed, you can only download 1 day at a time for 1 instrument at a time, it still crashes constantly, and the account performance reporting still doesn't work half the time. Also, yesterday I downloaded replay data for gj and it was showing a 7 pip spread during the U.S. session. It's usually around 2 pips through my broker, so I don't where the currency replay data is coming from, but it's unusable for me. I have 1 more month on my ninja license and I am trying to find a replacement before then.
Hey I've got issues from early 6.5 that are still present in 7 (eg X box graph crashes) that I have reported multiple times over years. And this happens on multiple installs and different hardware and OSes, but I get the runaround about reinstalling .NET (which I have done) or that they can't recreate it etc. I can recreate it on que, on any machine any OS, fresh install etc.
Yes it would be good if it worked. Have you ever tried a couple of strategies against a replay !! It's so buggy as to render it useless, its just crash after crash after crash.
As for the spread, if it is an FX instrument, then the data they record is gain and gain does have some of the wider spreads. THink of it as a worst case screnario.
There is no integrated software comparable with NinjaTrader. You could use
- Button Trader for trade execution / DOM / Advanced Trade Management
- One of the many charting programs (Sierra Chart, Ensign , MultiCharts, Investor RT)
- Amibroker for BackTesting
I started up this morning to trade my favorite $EURJPY and $GBPUSD, it crashed again while I was loading up charts, then it crashed when I entered a trade.
I have send an email to the sales dep. to cancel my quarterly subscription. I'm now looking at an alternative, I need a good charting program with preferable a charttrader and automatic trading possibility.
eDanny, I Agree there , its a real pickle when trying to replicate certain things. Although I myself can easily replicate the issue every day, but I guess there are still quite a few other things to try which I will get around to over this weekend.
One thing I dont understand though, the issue I had reported , although be it a small one, to me should be able to do a quick code compare without having to break it down.
Meaning, I reported how with NT7, that when you right click a chart and choose DATA SERIES, I cannot move the box or close it using the mini X.
But using NT6.5 , they call it something like Format Data Series instead of Data Series, but I can move it and I can close the dialog box using the mini X button on the top right corner.
Now surely it is similar coding for that simple function with that same box yeah? So why does it close in NT6 and not NT7 ?? (but only when using it on external monitors when you have multi display setup).
To me, even without the same hardware setup or replication to recreate it, they could spend half hour to compare the code to see what is actually different about the NT6 vs NT7 section of dialog boxes that have the miniX buttons.
In the scheme of things though, there are more important things needing fixed, but my point here is the process to be able to compare code surely would give a quick answer. Do you not think? And as you know there are programs out there that actually do that task and compare code etc etc.
This thread is really interesting and sad too. Seems that use of NT is more like a religious war than anything else. Anyway, I've been with nt for over 3 years now. I had a few problems at the beginning with version 6 but they weren't show stoppers. I learned the software and it's idiosyncracies (spelling) and find it to be just fine. I can't remember the last time I had a crash on my trading machine. You see, I have 3 computers. I do developement and all the stuff that may cause a problem on my development machine and then once I'm satisfied with the product I put it on my trading computer. Again, my trading computer hasn't crashed or even burped in quite some time.
Also, it takes quite a bit on my development computers to make them burp as well.
So, there you have it. My experience has been very good. NT 6.5 with Zen-Fire is very stable and fast for me.
Now for NT7. I have it on one computer and this latest version is doing very well too. It hasn't crashed at all. I do some sim trading on it just to test it to make sure my trading charts will perform as well as the nt 6.5 version.
All in all, I'm a happy camper. However, I know all good things can turn to dodo in a very short time.
Now for tech support...I get very good support from those guys. They respond quickly either via the support forum or email.
As I said at the beginning...very interesting and sad thread.
