Think or Swim has a good screener and Prodigo which is part of the application has a very comprehensive screener. I think the free version of Madscan should do the trick on your basic searches.
Yes, I used TOS as a stock screener when I was day trading stocks and screening for pre-market potential movement. My parameters were mainly <$30 stock, good volume (perhaps unusual) and preferably NASDAQ. TOS also has a reasonable overnight news feed that also provided some indication. Also used Finviz, BarChart and some of the exchange sites.
Again my purpose was strictly day trading.
Speaking of volume and TOS... Do they have average volume yet? That was / is a huge thorn in my side. Simply scanning for stocks with an average volume above x was impossible, as they admitted. Creating a Thinkscript was problematic with respect to the odd output, which was seemingly in scientific notation. At the end of the trading session, I wanted to scan for stocks for let's say at 50% above average volume, among other things.
When I was using it (last year) you could filter a min, max or 'between' volume. It didn't have average volume as it was just kinda a snapshot. Nor did it have a comparison that could result in an 'average'. It was a useful tool to help identify potential runners or sinkers at the open.
I'm not a programmer and never played with scripting. I just try and trade but do appreciate the guys that code the helpful tools.
I think something like Finviz or Barcharts might be able to spit out some scans based on a volume derivative but you would have to talk with them.
