Importing data into NT is quick and easy! I followed the steps listed on this page (under the How to import historical data from a text file section): NinjaTrader Version 7
After I downloaded the appropriate file type from the HDD platform, I opened NinjaTrader and clicked on TOOLS then HISTORICAL DATA MANAGER…
From there, I check the file format; HDD data downloads start of bar time, so make sure to change that in the Format options. Also, make sure to check the Data Type and time zone settings; HDD allows you to choose your GMT offset, so just match it to the option here. Once you have done it, click on Start Import:
It will allow you to select the file from your computer, and simply click OPEN when done. It will import the data and gives a pop-up message when done:
Keep in mind that it may take some time to import the data, and the more intense the data, the longer it will take (e.g. 1 year of daily bars is much faster than 1 week of tick data).
I hope this helps, please let me know if you have additional questions! My email is: [email protected]

I don’t know for sure, but I’m guessing it’s because the symbol must exist within Instrument Manager already. Please click here to see how to add/delete an instrument from Instrument Manager’s Database.
If you continue to run into issues, it may help to contact NinjaTrader directly for real-time assistance. Additionally, feel free to reach out to FXCM as well.
Thanks again for your question!

Wow losing faith in fxcm. Not free when you have to use fxcms 500.00 downloader...up until a couple months ago I could get all the data I needed right onto ninjatrader through my fxcm demo account...Now u want me to download it with your 500$ downloader geez...No wonder it stopped working...try to get the dough any way ya can it seems to me..but u say free...blahhh!!!!!
I appreciate you pointing that out. Let me clarify a few things for you, hopefully for the best.
The way that NinjaTrader downloads data from FXCM has never changed – you still have access to all the data for FREE through the NinjaTrader platform. For anyone who does not have a license for NT, the HDD app is available for purchase for $499 from the FXCM App store. Additionally, downloading the data from the Trading Station II is also available, click here to see a post for how to do so.
Now, once more clients started using NinjaTrader with FXCM, the speed at which one individual user could download historic data decreased. The other problem with this is that once NT downloads data, it is not saved locally, so each time a new chart is opened (even if you opened the same chart previously) it has to download the data again.
Most everyone I’ve seen using NinjaTrader likes to use Tick data – and that’s fine! Just keep in mind that it is a huge amount of data – 1 year of EUR/USD tick data can be upwards of a 1Gb file! Can you imagine downloading that much data every day? Or multiple times per day?
Now, given the higher demand for historical data, FXCM is working on a better solution for those using NinjaTrader and other platforms that download historical data. We are hoping to have this solution implemented soon, but for now, the best alternative is to get data through the NinjaTrader, HDD or Trading Station II platforms.
I hope this helps! If you have additional questions, feel free to post or email me at: [email protected]
Thanks!

It was stated multiple times in this thread that the FXCM downloader is being made available for free. Perhaps you didn't read the thread before you posted in it?
The bottom line is up until a couple of months ago I have been running the ninjatrader demo with fxcm demo and had all
the data up to the 20 symbol limit that tradestation has...Then I had to do the dreadful computer reset....no backup of data so...I attempt to redownload the data.. It would not download no more than the last 5 days worth of tick or minute data..
Now in the webinar you said available for free for demo use...However it seems to me that you made it longer if not
virtually impossible to download unless you go live with ninja license or purchase for $499.00 in which both cases its not free for demo as stated..If the solution to the download issue is your "HDD" make it available for free instead of trying to inch out a profit for the data as I see it..Not trying to offend anybody...However I feel offended once again by fxcm.
I like fxcm even with this happening...I wish fxcm would stop trying to take additional advantages and keep things on the up and up....Better Bussiness Practices!!! I am just a demo participant playing around with various ideas and strategy testing...hoping to come up with a profitable strategy like anybody else...However now for this you want me to pay...The world is full of small fish like myself and the more fish the better for fxcm and ninjatrader alike.
As far as reloading charts each time...I never had a problem with that from the very beginning almost a year ago..
Once the initial long downloads were done using the Ninjatrader historical downloader the data was available quickly afterwards as it was stored locally in my SQL database..
I would just like to be able to get back to testing as this delays me even longer just to wait for you to come up with a solution...A solution is very simple and available any time you wish to make it available..HDD is a solution albeit $499 if it is a solution, make it free across the board licensed or demo...You are closing doors instead of opening them IMHO..
Another solution is to make available zip files for download..(simple solution) You guys did it for Strategy Trader which you scratched without notifying the users that were developing with it!!
I have some clarification for how the charts function and data is saved through NinjaTrader (Thank you Ray!)
The NinjaTrader platform does save data locally (as you saw) and will do so in the following manners:
- FXCM servers allows downloads of 5 days of historical tick data
- NinjaTrader default days back settings for minute based charts is 15 days and 5 days for tick charts
- When NinjaTrader downloads data, it will check the last day it has saved locally and if the days back start date is equal to or older than this data it will re-download the entire data set. If the start date is newer, it will only load the current day
- The quickest way around this limitation is to change the days back period to 4 or less.
So to answer your question, you are correct, that the platform doesn’t natively have access to all FXCM data. As I mentioned before, FXCM is working on a fix so that the NT platform has access to all data itself (rather than the 5 day tick limitation and/or loading data from HDD).
For now and until a better fix is tested and available, live FXCM NinjaTrader account holders with over $5,000 balance can get the HDD platform free, simply email: [email protected] with your (1) name, (2) email address and (3) account number.
Now, to address what I believe is the core of the issue: The NinjaTrader platform was launched by FXCM in the hopes of offering clients another fantastic trading platform to utilize. As with any technological integration, it was not perfect from day one, however we are working to fix these issues. Ultimately, the goal is to provide all NinjaTrader users access to all historic data for free through the platform. If you have a NinjaTrader FXCM account with over $5,000 balance, then you can get HDD for free; this is the best alternative given the current circumstances.
I hope this alleviates some of your concern. If there is anything else I can help with, please let me know.
