Mental health in this country needs to come off the back burner. Another example of disturbed person that needed intervention and with out a doubt could not get any help. But sure blame the guns? Seriously...
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?

Hey @WoodyFox. Happy 4th. Appreciate your comments to @bobwest in the posts above. Thank You. And I do mean that sincerely.
I gather they now have "a person of interest" in custody, who is 22 and not the 18-20 previously speculated (still a white male though). Sounds like you already have access to his medical records and have assessed his mental state so I won't question that.
Ignoring the "guns don't kill people, people kill people kill debate" this does raise two potential lines of discussion.
Quoting wikipedia (the well known extreme leftist website)
On May 14, 2022, a mass shooting occurred in Buffalo, New York, United States, at a Tops Friendly Markets store, a supermarket in the East Side neighborhood. Ten Black people were killed and three other people were injured.[9][10][11] The shooter livestreamed part of the attack on Twitch, but the livestream was shut down by the service in under two minutes.[12] The accused, identified as 18-year-old Payton S. Gendron,[3] was taken into custody and charged with first-degree murder. He formally entered a plea of "not guilty" on May 19, 2022.[13]
Gendron is reported to have written a manifesto, describing himself as an ethno-nationalist supporting white supremacy and motivated to commit political violence. He voiced support for the far-right "Great Replacement" conspiracy theory in the context of a "white genocide". The attack has been described as an act of domestic terrorism, and the incident is being investigated as motivated by racism.[14][15][16][17] Governor Kathy Hochul promised policy changes in the state as a result of the attack, while condemning the shooter and consoling the victims' families.[16]
In your opinion was this person also in need of mental health support? If so is it fair to assume that anybody else with such mentally disturbed opinions should be blocked from owning guns? If so should we be able to remove guns from members of other white supremist organizations under the red flag laws? If he wasn't in need of mental health support what is your suggestion to prevent things like this that doesn't involving taking guns like this (not all guns) away?
Does this mean you are in support of single payer healthcare where everybody no matter what their financial resources is entitled to free mental healthcare help? (Probably worth pointing out at this point that good medical insurance actually pays for very little mental healthcare). If not how do you propose we address mental health conditions in this country when decent health insurance costs more than rent?
Do not need his records, the act itself shows he is mentally ill.
1. White supremacy is a mental illness of hate and many other delusional disorders.
2. Yes I support healthcare for all (Its in our best interest as a society), but we just simple have not come together on any thing that makes good sense. Its always one or the other...so divided.
and yes, anybody that is deemed mentally unhealthy should not be able to acquire a weapon.
Remember the marathon, they were mentally ill and still managed to kill (without a gun), so its not a fix all, but it would certainly help some.
There are many good reads on the mental illness situation we are in. Its been down hill since the 80's due to the repeal of the Mental Health Systems Act of 1980. We have been a society of relying on medicines and have slowly kicked people to the streets (just look at the homeless rate) and given up on good therapies and other forms of mental health treatments. The places were you can get good mental health treatments are far and few and the ones you can go to are most of time very costly. My sister in law owns her own practice out in Colorado and...she does very very well?

Thanks @WoodyFox I generally agree with you on the mental health discussion. While it doesn't line up precisely to the the 80s I do think that the internet in general and social media specially have shall we say (extremely?) 'amplified' the mental health problem.
While I am glad we have found some middle ground, I unfortunately feel a little bad in feeling the need to press a point that you seem to have avoided. If mental health is the problem, and we seem to be in agreement that "White supremacy is a mental illness of hate and many other delusional disorders" does that mean you support in the removal/restriction of guns for people that support that line of thought/suffer that mental illness? Ditto any other mental illnesses prevalent in society today.
They can shut down all the gun dealers, confiscate guns, make them totally illegal and this would still happen. They're copy cat rampages. Unstable people see these incidents, it sticks in their head and one day they decide to do it themselves.
None of these shooters have much of an original idea. So the problem is how do you differentiate crazy people from normal people? I don't think you can. The Fed is raising the age for gun ownership but this guy was 22 yrs. old.
At the end of the day, I don't think there's anything to be done to prevent these incidents. Another day, another copy cat.
The problem is not the gun itself - it is the ammunition.
If you can't get ammunition in the free market - you have nothing to prepare for a mass shooting.
You may get everything in a closed training area though - and you can shoot as much as you want. But at the exit you need to let unused ammunition back.
All fully controlled of course.
Is a normality for Swiss Army members - there is no ammunition for automatic / half automatic weapons on the market. For personal shooting training reason you have to go into closed training areas. But the weapon(s) are left with the soldier in his private place.
Of course this can not be done in a month in the USA.
Start thinking about.
No prayers from my side. Good luck.
^My 5 cents (increased from 2 because of inflation): If it is extremely easy to smuggle WEAPONS itself, you think the government can stop illegal smuggling of ammunition?!
It's like stopping someone from getting car parts illegally, but if people can just literally buy the whole smuggled cars, how hard is it to get parts for those cars?
E.g. Smugglers in Canada steal SUVs from Toronto and these cars reach the Montreal sea port in less than 24 hours ready to be smuggled out of the country. Then, when these cars are smuggled to Nigerian markets, they still have the license plates from Canada intact and clearly visible in Nigeria! Now you tell me, how hard will it be get parts for those stolen cars who can literally take the shipments of cars itself across the ocean in an instant?
The shooter threatened to kill himself and others to police just 3 months before acquiring a gun permit for a high powered rifle. No mental counseling from a judge, no "red flag"?
Just proves a point that although we need these laws in place for safety (As you and I believe)...they are not and will never be full proof.
I don't think that would work as long as we have open borders. It would just be another business opportunity for illegal smuggling across the southern border.

Yeah unbelievable! You actually have the laws in place to hopefully reduce things like this and then they fail miserably. Right hand doesn't have a clue what the left hand is doing. I did see that his Father a) was the real owner and the person who got all the knives back that were conviscated and b) co-signed his gun license application. Wonder whether that will get him into trouble? Difficult for him to argue he didn't know his son was prone to do this. On a related subject, nearly 40% of law enforcement agencies around the country did not submit any data in 2021 to a newly revised FBI crime statistics collection program. That's 7,287 law enforcement agencies that didn't report. You'd think we live in the pen and paper, pre-computer, pre-internet era. If the Chicago (or Highland Park or whoever it was) Police aren't talking to the State Police, and 40% of law enforcement agencies aren't reporting to the FBI, how can we expect back ground checks or red flag laws to work! This one is definitely a real big black eye for the regulate guns community. (But still a big black eye for the pro AR15 gun crowd as well)
