My PC time switched to DST automatically one week ago, as I have CET settings. The session templates of NinjaTrader coped with any changes caused by different daylight zones in a brilliant way. No problems at all, but the sessions automatically shifted in the way expected, that is the ES open was at 2:30 PM last week and now is back to 3:30 PM again.
NinjaTrader possibly has not lost your data, but the data is still sitting in your database. As you are switching around your session clock, the time stamps of that data do not match your local time anymore. NinjaTrader has detected the shift in the time zone and will not display the data with the false time stamps belonging to a different time zone.
You now need to export that data, convert the time stamps to the new time zone that you switched to and then reimport them.
To make it convenient for the user, NinjaTrader developers have chosen to store the price data in local time of the user and not in Universal Time. The disadvantage is that the data stored in local time needs to be converted if you switch your session clock.
Also if you have "lost" data, you can always reload it easily, unless you have not subscribed to a data feed allowing for backfilling historical data.
However there is one thing which really causes a problem, which happened to me once. I changed the system clock for testing some indicators in EST and forgot to shut down NinjaTrader before doing it. The result was a big mess, but I had to acknowledge that it was my own fault.
Can you help answer these questions from other members on NexusFi?
I have never got a white window with NinjaTrader. Exception, when I used badly coded indicators. It may well be that the translation to NinjaTrader of the TradeStation indicator was not done professionally. Could you show me some screenshots?
I am currently using IB TWS + Quotetracker but I am preparing myself to move to NT7 as QT will be phased out soon.
.
I got a NT free version for now and I can connect this free NT version to my IB paper account and to have real data flow ( I have 1 mn + 5mn charts filled with ES etc )
But the current TWS version does not work , TWS 917 must be used ( known bug !!)
I have started to play with Ninjascript/C# to create a first (simple) trading strategy , so for now no complaint from my side except I feel very annoying to have to switch between workplaces using the hot key "Shift + F3 or via the control panel
If the issue you are having is the issue of the continual reopening of the TWS logon screen, below is a tip provided by some chap on the Ninji forum. I have also included a link to the full thread on the forum.
Bypass the problem by configuring the IP setting of the NinjaTrader IB Connection with the IP of the machine. (instead of the local host 127.0.0.1). This will make a connection to the port without trying to start up TWS. Which wou will need to have up and running. Add the same IP to the Trusted IP Addresses in the API configuration or else accept the connection pop up from IB when NinjaTrader establishes a connection.
I feel your pain. I wish there was a platform that was heads above the rest. I see good features and bad on everything I've tried. None has it all, and none are as good as they should be. If I were King, there would be a platform that was the Mickael Jordan or Tiger Woods of platforms. For now, we have to settle for Davis Love Jr.
Ninja has some good features, Market Replay being one of the best. But there are many ways that Trade Station is better.
(1) Chart Marking: In Trade Station you can quickly mark up charts with one hand. Your tool bar can be customized and placed withing reach. One click and you have the tool you need. Ninja is combersome. It takes two hands to select a tool using the F keys. The option is a drop down menu where you may have to click three levels deep to get the one you want. In TS you can mark charts at about 4 times the speed. Ninja is better for text; much better. TS is very combersome for writing text.
(2) Global Cross Hair: The method I learned from New Futures Trading requires at least 7 charts; I use 9. To use the global cross hair function in Ninja, you have to go to each chart one at a time to turn it off and on. GADS! I hate this. Trade Station is over 10 TIMES FASTER using the Global Cross Hair. You can turn it off and on for ALL CHARTS with one click of the mouse. You can select one chart, one workspace, or all workspaces.
(3) In Trade Station you can left click and hold your mouse and drag the chart up and down from anywhere on the chart. With Ninja you have to go to the edge, left click and hold the mouse, and use the other hand to hit the control key. TS is one hand, simple stroke. Ninja is two hands and cumbersome.
If you are handicapped and have only one good arm or hand, you better not get Ninja. Trade Station will be much better for one handed operation. COME ON NINJA, HELP OUR HANDICAPPED RETURNING VETS AND FIX THIS. If you want to eat an apple while you mark up your chart, same thing. Get Trade Station. Ninja takes two hands and is more cumbersome. I have used both platforms for thousands of hours each giving me a pretty good foundation for my opinion. There are many other comparisons, but I'll leave it at that. Ninja is superior in other ways, so in the end, I think it is about a tie. It depends on your situation as to which is better. But then, I'm just a duck, and perhaps I swallowed too many feathers. Gulp!
-Quack-
Your ideas for new features sound pretty good. Have you asked for them in the NinjaTrader forums? If not you probably will never see them unless someone asks. Don't complain if you don't get what you didn't ask for.
