@Fat Tails:
you have anything to do with ninjatrader at all?
i doubt it, otherwise you would not post such nonsense. a trail stop or trail limit order is not possible in nt, normally i do not answer to uneducated people who become insulting because they have no arguments but it is important that everyone here learns about the truth about the ninjatrader.

Hello xxx,
Unfortunately you cannot submit a trailing stop order manually in NinjaTrader. You can only submit it part of an ATM strategy or using an automated strategy.
If you make use of an ATM strategy, you will need to submit an entry order manually. Once the entry order fills, a stop loss order will be submitted that will trail the market as you configured. More information can be found at the link below. Auto Trail
Sincerely,
Jason

Please mind your language.. Fat Tails has nothing to do with NT7 except being an end user and he is deeply respected by all of us at futures.io (formerly BMT) for coding many useful indicators and contributing in countless ways in the futures.io (formerly BMT) forum..
I do not wish to see you get temporarily revoked as you have posted good comments..
I would say that this confirms that you can use a trailing stop, when you enter a position. When I trade manually, I use OCO orders, I have a profit target for my first position and a trailing stop for my second position.
What you cannot do is to change the trailing stop after you have entered the position.
Also a trailing stop cannot be used to enter a position, if volatility moves against the prevailing trend.
I am still interested to learn which free and professional software you have found that offers better features. I also have an account with IB, so it might be interesting for me to know.
FatTails - think you can also change it, on the DOM you can right click on your Stop order and disable your Auto BE or trail and then mod the settings used, reactivate after inputting the changes.
fred1, perhaps consider working on your trading aura a bit more, the tone here on futures.io (formerly BMT) is normally very constructive and certainly likable that way.
@ThatManFromTexas: Come on, I have tickled @fred1 a bit by indirectly questioning his status as master and saying that he hadn't done his homework.
I apologize, if I should have annoyed him, and I can certainly stand his reaction. He was right with what he wanted to say (but did not say). NinjaTrader does not support standalone trailing stops. However, they can be used within the framework of an ATM strategy attached to the order that opens a position.
But I still want to know what is this free & professional software.
In light of some recent comments, including mine, I should probably clarify I actually like NT and have no regrets purchasing it--cheap at 2x the price as they say, and exactly what I was looking for. IMO, unlike e.g. MT (used only a short time) it's almost perfect for trading research, strategy development (which I do a lot of) and retail trading, even if (like any computer program running under Windows) you wouldn't want to blindly trust it with your life savings, and the fact it (6.5) and I got off to a bad start (took me a while to figure out the bad behaviour was due to an anti-virus program yanking its chain). Any criticism I may post is mostly a function of frustrations associated with learning short time frame spot Forex and a Type A personality (IMO Type A being a considerable burden in trading)--not entirely due to NT. As mentioned, at this stage its behaviour is at least predictable. IMO it could use some tweaks but certainly doesn't prevent me making money, and not responsible when I lose it.
Think of it as ... the girlfriend you fight with all the time.... BUT ... she is willing to do the things you want to do .... that your other girlfriends wouldn't .... so you decide not to breakup with her... BUT ... you still rant about her to the other guys at the gym....
I'm just a simple man trading a simple plan.
My daddy always said, "Every day above ground is a good day!"
Spot on yet again, if we substitute "wife" for "other girlfriends", and recognizing unfortunately I'm more inclined to pop a beta blocker and lurk on futures.io (formerly BMT) after a long day than work it out at the gym :-/
i have tested maybe 85% of all trading software under the sun and i always find myself playing around with the ninjatrader even though i use other software for trading. there are so many neat and sweet features of the ninjatrader and every day you will discover new ones. i have even tried to program the nt which i find quite easy to do. by doing that i came across the indicators that fattail has developped. good work, mate, that changes my opinion about you. actually i could not care less who 'likes' whom in a forum- this is a very silly and immature notion. i have enough friends in real life and i could not care less about opinions or sympathy of people who i do not even know. what should matter is what value we get from each other.
with regards to the ninjatrader i would consider buying it again under the following premises:
1. exit orders do not get stored locally but nt transmits the order to the broker where it will stay and be executed regardless of power outages or connection losses
2. nt does implement quick buttons for exit orders. i need a trailing stop button. every professional trading software has a trailing stop button(there is a reason). i just need that for my style of trading. tws (ib) has a clear definition of two step trailing stops. it would be easy to implement this logic in the next nt release.
at the moment i use tws for long term swingtrades and transact for short term daytrades. both software apps are free and both apps allow the execution of trailing stops server sided for no additional fees. why do i still like the nt? it is like an addictive toy and i can afford it..
i hope that anyone from the ninjatrader company will read this and consider to implement those very basic features in the next release. i am sure that it will cost ninjatrader less than the 1500 bucks that i will spend to buy it.
otherwise i will just continue to use the free one and be happy also
