Pre-Internet, the way people got together and shared "forum" posts and files. Mine was called "The Elite Circle", running FrontDoor and PCBoard, on DesqView and QEMM386 with big hard drives and a whole bunch of Nakamichi 18-disk CD changers. I was one of the main fidonet hubs that delivered mail all over the nation towards the end, before I pulled the plug one day because my mom needed money for an operation - so I sold everything on one weekend and "poof" it was over.
I still remember when 28.8k modems came out, it was "blazing fast" compared to the 9600 baud we had been used to. I went to Best Buy (maybe it was Circuit City actually, can't remember) with my friend @Gary and we bought every single one of the new ZyXEL 28.8k modems they had, and man they were like $400-$500 a piece or something crazy. The girl at the checkout counter couldn't figure out what we were doing, keeping in mind we were only 15 or so. Paid cash and hooked them up and was one of the first BBS's to have them running on all nodes...
Anyway, off-topic for this thread. Maybe one day we should create a nostalgia thread for us old timers.
I'm running Windows 8.1, the only difference for me initially was the new start screen. I installed Stardock Start 8 and after that it feels like Win 7. Starts up in desktop and has the start menu. Besides that haven't noticed much difference. I use the desktop version of chrome, don't use anything metro. Maybe if I had a touch screen laptop or multitouch trackpad I could swipe between full screen apps I would give Metro a try. Right now those basic full screen apps on a 27" look ridiculous.
I had a Windows 8.1 CD and installed it on a new partition.
Then I installed Windows 7 on another partition.
(I have two 3TB drives in the machine)
1 for Windows 8
1 for Windows 7
1 for Data Storage on two partitions.
(this is my desktop configuration)
My laptop runs Windows 7 only.

I hate windows 8 as well. There are just so many little annoying things. I have been a windows build your own PC guy for a long time. But windows 8 finally forced me to a mac. I just don't like the direction Microsoft is going. My trading takes place on a remote server so don't really need windows on my local PC. I will probably put windows 7 on a virtual machine on my mac for a few pieces of software.
Let me just say as I sit here on my completely quite i7 iMac on OSX life just makes more sense. On windows 8 I found myself in daily frustration. I also find interesting the windows RDP that Microsoft puts out for mac is better than the windows version as it handles higher resolutions better. Go figure.
Apple hardware kind of crazy expensive but so far I have found it is worth it.
"The day I became a winning trader was the day it became boring. Daily losses no longer bother me and daily wins no longer excited me. Took years of pain and busting a few accounts before finally got my mind right. I survived the darkness within and now just chillax and let my black box do the work."
Even if it was any good I wouldn't like it.
I have actually never tried it and likely never will, it took me up til last year to move up to 7 from xp (happily bypassed vista). I wait along time to upgrade which is good in terms of letting everyone else being the Guinea pigs. By the time I have to change again I suspect the whole tile thing and no start button thing with 8 will be long gone. The rumors about 9 seem encouraging, time will tell.
Most typical hiccup for laptop upgrades/downgrades is to make sure the video card drivers exist for the old/new version, I have an old Dell Vostro laptop running Vistacrawl that I can't take to W7 for that exact reason.
