I've worked as a rocket scientist for 5 years and have been working in the hedge fund industry for 7 years now. My personnal experience has been that the vast majority of people you deal with are very smart and full of ethics / good morals, we sometimes laugh at the media and the picture they try to portrait.

Retail brokers / stock brokers / brokers / anything non-institutional is usually where you see guys who work in finance for the wrong reason and have the intellectual level of a cleaning lady or gardener.

Same story with all the mortages, CDO, CDS, etc.
