I don't know how much it'll help you, but I decided to write about my friend's experience. Personally, I've never had to have that kind of experience. But I know that my friend took a dog into his family a couple months ago. Since there was no dog shelter nearby and my friend had no car, he took his future pet from a family he knew. They were just giving away puppies from their dog, and they offered my friend to choose his own puppy. He was like really happy, I've never saw him like that.
