I'm curious to see if anyone has a Dell T3500, running XP 64 bit with the Nvidia "NVS 420 Quadro" on 4 monitors? I have this set up and it's been an absolute nightmare...
For some reason, I keep experiencing one of my monitors blacking out. I've changed the following through Dell's support and am still at a loss here:
- New Nvidia NVS 420 Quadro graphics card (actually switched these out twice)
- New Hard Drive
- New Motherboard
- Re-installed XP OS
- Switched out monitors
- Switched out DVI Dongle
None of these have resolved the problem and I'm wondering if anyone else has had the joy of dealing with this. I'm wondering if the DVI dongle (attaches from card, splits into to arms, each arm has two DVI ports) is not compatible with XP or something. The next experiment at this point is to change to Windows 7 64 bit.
Any feed back would be greatly appreciated as I am not computer savvy to this extent.
What resolution are you running on the monitors? Are they the native resolution? Means the default for that monitor, usually the highest. For 24" it is 1920 x 1200.
NVS is a 2D card. Windows 7 likes 3D cards more than 2D cards.
Now when you get the irritating "Admin Rights needed" dialog box for say installing some software, the NVS will go onto initialization and blanks the monitor. Why it does that? I don't know. My guess is that the dialog box puts the PC into a state of reset for the kernel and thus resetting the graphics card.

Hi Mike,
The problem appears to be at random. Affecting various monitors at a time unless configured like I have them now. For example, before my monitor went blank, the resolution wouldn't set correctly and couldn't get it to the native level. It looked as if it were in "Safe Mode" or something with my screen being huge. I'd have to move my pointer around just to scroll to the top of the page, etc. This made me think there was an issue with the card itself but after replacing it two times and getting the same issue, I've moved on to other ideas. I'm hopeful it's just XP x64 giving me the problem but I'm not the savviest when it comes to issues like this.
I'm open to any help/experience at this point. Luckily I'm able to utilize 3 monitors right now but am skeptical as to how long they will last. Dell is sending me Windows 7 Professional x64 which I'm hoping will be the answer.
